Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

This week's gonna be tough. There's going to be a lot of hysteria (rightly so) and cries about needing stricter measures and longer measures etc, more setbacks, because our death figures are going to be abysmal. Sadly, there'll be tons of people who have died this weekend and it'll all get collated and reported from Tuesday to Thursday. It's going to be grim.

Just got to look at the vaccine/doses numbers for a bit of a light at the end of the tunnel, and also hold out hope that this coming week will be the last of the death rates rising. Based on the infection rates, it should be.

Death figures will be bad, but infection rates won't. Anyone with a degree of sense will see we're past the worst of it now but it won't be reflected in terms of deaths for another 2-3 weeks, where - sadly - we could break the 2,000 a day mark.

Its only England figures, so 1/2 million a day (at least), for 100 days, plus the 5 million already done, gets you to 55 million by June.

Supplies though innit.

It's two doses though. So you have to have enough in reserves for those who have received a dose so they can have their second 12 weeks later (I think they'll u-turn on Pfizer to 8 weeks to be honest).

So no chance really unless we up it to 1 million a day consistently but, as you say, supplies/vials.

August would be the earliest IMO, more likely September/October, but the back of it broken by taking all over 50s and medically at risk out of the firing line of the virus by late April/May.

Thats the important bit.

I will trust the medical folk re one, two or three jabs, but I reckon its accepted that once folks immune systems get trained to be, er, immune, this bloody CV will become little more than a normal winter bug.

Which like most, I have had this winter, as per.

There was an article published in the Telegraph last Sunday that said the NHS/logistics (whoever's doing it) were optimistic that by the end of june every adult in England would have been offered their first dose. However, everything would have to go well with no issues and the speed of vaccinations continues to grow, so Public Health England obviously won't be committing to anything.

Was me Dads birthday today, so took his fave red wine up earlier. (allowed).

They told me they were having a takeaway roast from their usual pub in normal times, as a treat so Mum didnt have to cook, and they could have different meats.

"Thats sound Dad, nice to help them tick over"

"Tick over? They do 140 a day!"

Nice one I thought.

It’s a nice one that both your mum and dad are Ok....;)

Dad seriously needs a haircut!

But they are doing what millions are doing; the right thing, and making the best of it. They are more concerned that Nikki is ok, getting better, and is kept away from the virus, bless them.

Funny enough over dinner I mentioned the same thing as my granddaughter got behind me and put my hair up like Doc Brown in back to the future. Then I asked how come during lockdown all these bleeding footballers still have fancy hairstyles, they can’t all be married to hairdressers.......

Tis a mystery.

I even gave him and Mum some clippers when I somehow managed to order 3 of the things in Lockdown #1.

To be fair, they probably took a look at me after Nikki tried them out on me.

Re the covid vaccine.
What is the recommended spacing and what is the efficacy?

I was told 11 to 12 weeks for next jab at the clinic.

Re side effects.. Awful first 12 hours or so. Very tired for 24 to 36 hours. Fever and sore muscles.

Now 48 hours on and feel ok. Hoping another full sleep will get me over worse of the side effects.

14 to 21 days for around 80 to 90% protection from first dose, then Pfizer recommends second dose then. To inocculate more people quicker, the UK have decided to space it out to 12 weeks with no real evidence for doing so except for anecdotal evidence from other vaccines.

The AZ vaccine has more evidence for 12 week spacing, 60% approx protection from first dose, but in terms of strong clinical evidence there's very little for advocating such a long delay, as the protection from the first dose could feasibly decay.

I'm short, act like you haven't had the vaccine until around two weeks after your second dose to be completely safe. And then, of course, still take safety measures regardless out of respect for others, not only out of courtesy but because there's no study that says being vaccinated prevents you from still transmitting the virus.

Thanks. So 60 percent from first and then 80/90 from 2nd for the Oxford vaccination?

What does the efficacy actually mean in layman's terms? Trying to explain to my 13 year old..

OK so that's the percentage of not catching COVID after getting the vaccine. So around 60% protection 2 to 3 weeks after first dose, 90% 2 to 3 weeks after second.

However, all indications are that around 14 to 21 days after the first dose, even if you catch COVID, the vaccine prevents serious illness from infection, which is actually the much more important discussion point when it comes to the efficacy of the vaccine to prevent deaths and "long COVID".

You can see why they are doing, its about getting more needles in arms.

IF, IF it ends up being wrong, I personally cant fault why they are doing it.
