Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

It's the only way.

This isn't a defence of the government here, but it won't be helped by the constant hysteria, constant stories of new variants being able to overcome the vaccine etc. All it does is add fear. That's as damaging to getting it out there as bloody anti-vax freaks.

I'm not talking about propaganda. If there's issues we obviously need to know. But there just has to be perspective.

Having 3.2m done by Jan 15th is not bad at all. Yes, it needs to increase quickly but so far it is doing.

30 days' time - if we hit 300,000 a day (so keep today's pace) - that'd be 12m (give or take) vaccinated/given their first dose. Isn't the target 13.3m people?

Say they have 1.5m to make up to hit that figure though Johnson did fudge it by basically saying the end of Feb half-term - gives them a week to play with. I guess it may slow down at weekends and tick up in the week but if we can maintain 300k per-day it's not bad going.

It's doable. But obviously, that's just the start.

I won't be cryarsing if 13.3m people haven't been vaccinated by Feb 14th. It's not like we'll be out of lockdown then anyway. There'll be no change until early March at least but, if we can get those vulnerable groups done, then there should be no need for lockdowns. Not a full return to normal straight away, obviously, but a tiered appraoch - done right - should then suffice as the vaccinations ramp up across the general population.

That would have to be done right, though. Nothing daft like London into Tier 2.
Spot on everything you say ;)

There’s a lot of things to slate the government about, but there are only three nations in the world with a higher vaccination rate per capita right now.

For some context, my partner has been administering vaccinations for the past three days. In 12 hour shifts they’re doing about 35 doses. So you’d need about 11,000 people administering 12 hours per day to hit the 300,000 doses mark. It really is a mammoth undertaking.

Think it's telling they have left the experts in the NHS to organsise and administer the vast majority of vaccines like your partner, unlike other aspects of their response like test and trace procurement of PPE which was farmed to their chummy private companies.

Not much to be congratulated on not taking another opportunity to rip us off in a pandemic, I suppose the bar is low and some are easily pleased.

However, at what cost to other other services time will tell.

Nobody is congratulating them. But all that matters right at this moment is getting those vaccines in the arms of as many people as possible.

Know your place and let the elites do their thing.

Oh bore off.

They're sportspeople in a bubble.

Also, there's currently an entire flight's worth waiting on test results and if one single person who flew tests positive, they all have to isolate for two weeks.

The Indian cricket team recently spoke about how hard it was for them to be in their bubble when around them life was all but running normally.

I can't agree with you more.
I've just had a quick look at the mail on line.
Absolutely disgraceful the rumours and scaremongering on there
Should be banned.

Agree with most of that. Genuine question, but if we do immunise the 70+ age group and frontline care, why can't we have a nationwide tier 2? Cases and deaths should be on the tip by then and the group immunised account for almost 90%? Of the deaths.

But it's not just about deaths is it. Thousands of people become ill enough to require hospital treatment and even IC.
It's overloading the hospitals that must be avoided.

really this should be inscribed on great bats made out of titanium, which are then used to batter the people who say "YES BUT LOCKDOWN HAS CAUSED CANCER TREATMENTS TO BE STOPPED"

But don't they also account for a very high % of hospitalisations? In a months time (and cases seem to be dropping) combined with the vaccine surely we will be in a position to be opening up again? Just trying to be a bit optimistic.

I know from experience that it caused cancer treatments to be stopped and/or delayed.

What we have now is a combination of lockdown and vaccinations. We don't know for sure how this will pan out but certainly we shouldn't expect the lockdown to last as long as last spring?

Like I said, there’s plenty of other things to slate the Government for.

But if our vaccine response is so terrible I would question why there are only three nations worldwide with a higher dose administration per capita, and not a single western nation.

True mate although 80% of hospital admissions are over 60's / those with severe underlying health conditions.

I could imagine General Sturgeon keeping everyone locked away for another 12 months but I think the big galoot will slowly open back up once we get a certain level vaccinated.
