Thats the attitude in this country though isn't it. People go to work sick and it carries on spreading.

Our work has an office in South East Asia and the people there don't understand how everything is open in the UK when the virus is so bad.
'everything' hasn't been open in most places for well over two months

The government wording is exactly the same as it was in March
So? still wrong. It should have said other than people who work for food or basic needs related sectors, (obv medical too) everybody should work from home. That language is so vague.

Because a load of people don't get paid if they don't.

If we had a robust system in place to keep everyone at home, like universal payments, it wouldn't happen.

Instead we have the furlough scheme which, while decent enough for those it works for, has loads fall through the gaps.

But the point is that these same companies that followed the exact same wording in March are now deciding not to follow it now.

And you can't say what you're suggesting because there are simply far too many businesses outside of those sectors that have to keep going in some form.

Schools aren't now shut - teachers still go in to teach key workers' kids (does that include people who work in supermarkets - I guess so?). Construction sites didn't stop last time around and aren't this time. Vast majority of office work will be done remotely but sometimes people still need to go in to get files or have access to certain software - those trades need to keep going in some capacity.

So the language is what it has been all along.

Loads of people can work from home now though - so unless they're really ill, they don't have that excuse.

I fully agree that, especially right now, if you feel ill - in terms of something you could spread - you shouldn't go into work. But that excuse doesn't fly if you're able to work from home, which almost every office is set up to do.

The industry that really isn't great for calling in ill is retail and hospitality. Well, they aren't open, so the 'they won't get paid if they don't go in' thing doesn't fly there either.

If you're not well enough to work at all it's a different matter. If you think you should be given universal payment because you've got a cold, even though you can log in from home and not endanger anyone else, then that's another thing altogether.

National lockdown like March ?? - dozens of people I know turning up for work for non-essential jobs this morning - bosses pretending nothings happening - farcical state of affairs.

Most offices are all going to be working remotely or have been for the last 10 months now?

What other non-essential jobs are you on about?

But that's mostly the likes of your B&Qs, Halfords etc

They were all open in March and April, too, on a click and collect basis.

There's gonna be very few small independent businesses that will open on click and collect.

The likes of B&Q opened late April or May for click and collect.

As for as i can see, any shop can offer click and collect to stay open. Probably be the next thing to be locked down when big lines of people start happening.

I don't think that's right then mate. I think whatever we had open in late April can suffice. They have proved they can operate safely. Also, I tend to think that naturally people might just order for delivery if they can, to avoid standing in line in the cold and wet - bit different in spring with the weather we had.

After having March to August last year off to look after my 8year old - can't wait to tell my boss its going to happen again - worked at the same firm for 27 years, but my stock has irrevocably lowered my stock there - with bosses and bitter work mates who have no children and don't understand.
Bottom line is I feel I'm being forced out through no fault of my own. What a mess this all is

Construction mainly - bosses who furloughed staff back in march now turning a blind eye - capitalism v basic humanity - in the end the furlough scheme is there to get us out of this faster

Construction is essential though. It classes as essential.

Sites have to keep on going. And with the strict HS regulations and - and I do this for a job so I know - the COVID risk assessments and testing procedures now been written up - then sites are geared for staying safe.

Offices is a different matter, but people still need to be working if sites are going. The sites need head office support. However, that support should not require loads of people to be in the office. They can work from home and still offer that support.

The SME that I work for had been following a rota system. Now it's just going to me going into the office for my two days a week. I'm doing that as the software I need, I can't access at home - one of those reasons being that I have two housemates who also work from home and need the computers.

If an SME can do that, then big companies can be more than geared for it, and other SMEs too. However, the wording is the same as it was in March so it's down to the companies to follow it - as they did in March.

If the company needs to keep going, they can't be placing staff on furlough unless there's good reason (childcare, drop off in contracts etc). That's an exploitation of the system.

You shouldn't feel like that, and the furlough scheme is in place for you in that scenario too.

Make them aware of this if they aren't already but it's your right to do it - and this is what the scheme is for.

If you could spend a day in the construction industry I'm sure you'd be flabbergasted at what occurs - okay covid measures put in place, but essentially to tick boxes and cover backsides. Very little enforcement to be fair.
