That would wipe some of them out - sorry for repeating myself, but they’ve become entirely reliant on borrowing (admittedly by students rather than themselves). Thirty years ago they could have easily made it through this with not that much support, but not now.

Then the government should support them. But they shouldn't be having students travelling halfway around the country.

I think you can have a lockdown without having police and military on the street.

However, I don't see curfews etc making much difference at this time. Neither will stopping people being able to go out on a walk or for a run/bike ride, whatever.

Keep the schools shut, keep the unis shut, and hope that makes a difference as the vaccines start to roll out.

Nobody can do anything anyway. It's the dead of winter, there's nowhere to go.

The cases will only shoot up again once any lockdown restrictions are eased anyway.
It doesnt work though. One proper lockdown and almost full return to normal afterwards would be the sensible way. This open up and then locking down circle is idiotic.

A curfew reminds me of China. Do we really want that. Not me.

Well China with its severe lockdown has practically eradicated it and the pictures and videos from Wuhan for its new year celebration are a lot different to ours.

The initial severe lockdown worked and will be better for the economy while we plod along in stupid tiers dragging this out for another 4 months.

My mate who works for the i put this out yesterday.

The responses - some of them - genuinely baffle and frighten me. He was obviously been semi-serious (it's a good point, what would be the difference) but the first 2 responses were about banning exercise and having the military on the streets.

Been there and done that in Madrid for 6 weeks last year. I can assure you that it's as horrible as it sounds.

Personally my next step in the UK would be to properly enforce masks on public transport and in shops with big fines being given out if you fail to comply. If everyone in Spain can wear a mask when they're outside of the house then people here can stop being selfish and do so for the 20 minutes they're on the bus or in a shop.

They shouldn’t, but I hope the astronomical cost (if all loans + other incomes are taken into account then it’s around £20 billion) of such support provokes a long overdue recognition that the current system is utterly unsustainable.

But we wouldn't get that because we'd just see the cases rise straight back up again and people would be calling for lockdowns. It's just a cycle.

I 100% expect another lockdown, btw. But what do you mean by 'proper'? Genuinely, what is the difference between Tier 4 now and another lockdown, other than retail has to close - and again, you HAVE to wear a mask or visor/covering if you work in or go into a shop (not that I do) and they all have limits on how many can go in.

What else is currently open that is definitely the cause of this spread - other than schools?

Germany now looking into possibilities of increasing length of time between doses and also if they can get 6 doses out of 1 vial of the Pfizer vaccine rather than the prescribed 5.

I wish they'd hurry up and approve AZ and Moderna lol

I just think it's barbaric. And shouldn't be encouraged.

I mean, if I go out on a walk, I have a snood so I usually have that pulled up - so I agree with the mask thing when walking.

But when I go on a run - different on the bike as I also wear said snood and I've hardly been out lately - I don't wear a mask. I wouldn't be able to breathe. However, I do keep my distance from people or stop so that we can keep away from each other on the path or whatever.

A curfew is currently operating here in France. 6pm to 6am. Many reason for going out exist but you have to carry a self certification for the reason.
Police and gendarmerie DO stop and carry out checks.
No problem in my village though, they're all in bed by 9pm.
Also masks to be worn all times outdoors in streets, transport etc.
