Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

I see the vaccine maker Pfizer is being ignored by an obviously politicised MHRA.

Oh dear.

You can tell how politicized it is by how careful they've been to make it clear its a science-led decision to completely go against the instructions for the vaccine, and the previously agreed plan (which actually was science-led).

Indeed.

Again, hate conspiracy theories, but honestly when there's this much actual evidence is it even a conspiracy anymore?

I point you to literally every other country in the world, bar about three, who have also 'mismanaged' this pandemic.
Irony is, this bloke - and my dad - were sat in a steam room at the gym.

My dad just said "what are you doing in here then?"
2 quotes taken from consecutive posts on this thread shows the problem with trying to blame the government for the number of cases.

The government can do all the lockdowns they want, they can take action as quick as they want but the reality is people will still want to get on with their lives as normal and they'll do it thinking they're not doing anyone any harm.

It's always other people spreading the virus, it's other people putting people at risk. The government have imposed rules that haven't been adhered to. I'm not defending the government but I'm certainly not defending the UK population either.

Lol

You can say that and fairly so

But I point you to literally every other country in the world, bar about three, who have also 'mismanaged' this pandemic.

nearly 1,000 record deaths again yesterday in Germany. France is hitting similar numbers.

Every other country in the G7 has managed it better than us.

Every other country in Europe has less deaths. We have been a shambles.

Except all common sense ever.

Do you know how hard it is to pin down exactly where transmission took place.

Someone can go the gym, catch it there, be asymptomatic for five days, 'suddenly' catch it and they'll put it down to a workplace or whatever.

The idea gyms are safe during a viral pandemic that relies on transmission via aerosol is ludicrous. It's about as stupid as believing kids can't catch or spread it.

Look, I haven't been to the gym since March. I'd rather not bother with the hassle of booking a slot etc. My friends and parents do go, and they all say the measures in place are really, really strict. Have to book a slot, only a certain number allowed, all the equipment cleaned - social distancing measures in place etc.

There's is a very big gym chain (Nuffield) so maybe it differs from gym to gym. Exercise and physical health should be promoted, though. If we had a healthier society, less people would have died from this.

If they shut again, then they all have to shut, but gyms opened up in the summer and again we didn't see a massive spike. The spike came from unis, schools and the changing weather and, then, not putting the most populous area of the country into Tier 3.

The irony was this council worker - who will have nothing to worry about if there's a second lockdown job wise, he'll be covered and safe - was spouting about how a lockdown was needed while sitting in a steam room (which I am surprised are allowed to open).

All of which means next to nothing.

Three key factors - duration of contact, being indoors and aerosolisation. Gyms have people indoors, breathing considerable amount of aerosols, for prolonged periods of time - the perfect environment for a virus. All gyms do is mitigate against droplet transmission - it isn't enough.

Rather than explain it in words, this video does it.

And this helps you visualise what a severe difference aerosolisation makes.

Gyms aren't safe in a viral pandemic that is transmissable via aerosol. That's the be all, end all of it.
