tbf, their 4,000 figure is probably right

they just shot the rest of them

I wasn't actually joking - I think that'll be the reason. Thousands dying in their own homes out of fear of exposure to the authorities, which could result in their entire families being killed.

Got to make light of it though or it'd drive you mad knowing situations exist like this in the world and you can do nothing about them.

TBF it’s probably that they didn’t have a test then, so no one died from COVID however an extra 35000 - 40000 odd died from pneumonia, organ failure or some such thing.

Not that we’ll ever find out that number mind.

Yeah I'm not meaning it to be a game of one-upmanship.

But if people really think we should be following China's example based on their numbers, then they're just being completely ignorant, and purposefully so.

I take on board other points about test and trace etc. But let's face it, it's a completely alien place (to us).

Well, I don't think people are saying we should be following China's example - it's impossible to do so without being a dictatorship.

But... we could learn some lessons from China in that a strict lockdown worked. Even if it's extremely likely that China's figures aren't accurate, it's still probable at the same time that it was contained to a good degree due to the measures they took.

Our half-arsed tier system, in comparison, clearly does not work. If we imported China's attitude here right now, the country would be locked down in full for a month and anyone going out doors for any reason not related to foraging for food to survive would be promptly shot in the head.

I think we could learn from all but the "shot in the head" part of that.

I agree there, in the sense about we could learn lessons.

Maybe it was the way I took the initial tweet I posted to here, but to me that wasn't about 'learning lessons'.

It was just some bloke that (fairly) hates the tories, and is thinking of anything to slam them with. If you're that desperate to do that that it takes you to China, then I'd argue you're going overboard.

FWIW, our first lockdown worked, didn't it. A combination of factors helped - good weather especially - but it got the numbers down. It came too late, and maybe was too lenient at times, but frankly I'm extremley glad I was able to leave my house in March, April and May. And people going on walks and bike rides in that time wasn't spreading the virus. People congregating in groups in parks etc is a different story.

I also don't want there to be a lockdown where I can't leave my house. Not just for me, but for everyone. It would do so much damage to people mentally. It's already done enough.

Vaccine is coming, everywhere's in Tier 3 or 4 now. It's crap, it's crap that we have so many deaths, crap that Europe is knackered too. Just have to get through the next few months and then get back up and running.

It's why I haven't really got the clamour from people demanding BJ spoke over the last few days? What's the point? We know it's bad. What was he gonna say that's going to make one bit of difference.

I'm not an expert but I don't think the politicians have loads of special freezers in storage.

The miracle vaccine is the Oxford vaccine. Its that simple.
It's their job to get them (and vials etc). What's the use of paying for research and vacccines if you cant deliver them efficiently?

Animal markets are still rolling, the Chinese partying in Wuhan, scenes. We learned nothing, nothing substantial will change. What a wasted, terrible, depressing, meaningless year.

Have a slightly better one, everybody!

The anti-vaxers aren't the worry.

It's the people clamouring for full lockdown for months on end (they'll usually have an EU flag in their Twitter handle) until every single person is vaccinated, or magical new zombie strains appearing that mean we have to hold off on getting back to normality even when the vulnerable groups have been vaccinated that are the issue.

The government has one job now - get these vaccines out efficiently and to those who need them, asap. Once that's done, then life should be allowed to go back to the 'normality' that we had in the summer, at least. No tiers, no lockdowns. Yes, social distancing to an extent and yes, masks etc on transport. That's all well and good while the rest of the vaccines are rolled out. But anything further than that is beyond what should be put up with.

People moaning about lockdowns and masks usually have a union jack in their twitter handle and read the daily mail while listening to talk radio.

The first lockdown never worked, we went into it too late and came out too early and never had a track and trace system working.

Their will be a full lockdown again due to these failures.

If there's one nation that we should be learning lessons from, it's not a nation led by a despotic dictatorship who have weaponised the virus.

Instead, look at the democratic nations of Taiwan, Japan and South Korea, especially Taiwan, who destroyed the virus before it was able to gain a foothold in their country by being proactive and on top of things way back in December of last year.
