They absolutely have.

But conversely we don't have a few million ethnic minorities locked up in forced labour camps, or anyone dissenting with the Tories being rounded up and shot in the head in remote fields, so it's swings and roundabouts I guess!
Yeah I dont agree with their policies like.

But this, they handled better then most.

As stated earlier the figures don’t look great for today, the results of data catch up from the other home nations over the holiday weekend

Hospital figures - 528 deaths were announced today, up 110 on yesterday and up 2 on last Wednesday. 494 deaths were in English hospitals, up 129 on yesterday and up 78 on last week. The 7 day rolling average rises very slightly to 390.29

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 981 deaths were announced today, up 567 on yesterday and up 237 on last Wednesday. The 7 day rolling average rises to 499.57

For the 60 day cut off, 1130 deaths were announced today, up 642 on yesterday and up 278 on last Wednesday. The 7 day rolling average rises to 558.71

China have handled this better than any country in the world.

I realise you wont accept this, but maybe if you read up on it you would understand.

Its impossible to believe that, though. They've still not let the WHO in properly, and they still persecute anyone who challenges whatever the narrative is. I can believe they locked Wuhan down - after all they've shown us that bit - but as for what happened elsewhere we have no idea.

I can't get over how absolutely mental you'd have to be to put China as a shining light of COVID excellence.
I must be mental because I do think some things that China have done around Covid have been excellent. A lot of them were simple things that months in we still aren’t doing - like asking people to wait for their test results rather than leave and continue potentially spreading the virus, using chest x rays in parrallel with testing to determine those with worse case effects even if they were free of symptoms, housing people away from their families if they did get a positive test and in hard hit areas getting people to stay in their homes and having groceries delivered.

Think it fair to question how many of these could be done in a democracy and we of course shouldn’t minimize some of the grotesque things they also did but I do wish we had taken some of their better ideas and seen if they could be implemented, at least in a modified form.

China have basically had almost no deaths outside Wuhan. I don't see how anyone can believe that. There are over a billion people and the test wasn't developed for quite some time. A few people from skiing resorts caused major damage in the UK but Wuhan with links across most of China caused no spread..

I'd say its a tad dodgy that all of the journalist and doctor whistleblowers are dead or in jail.

It's easy to lock people in their homes when they live under a communist government which answers to nobody.

They've thrown journalists in jail for reporting on the pandemic.

It's a totally different world.

They were building morgues and mass graves - supposedly - in February.

4,000 deaths? 87,000 cases?

I don't disagree that of course they have done some things well. But we have no actual idea of what has gone on there do we? And keep in mind that they kept the country open for Chinese New Year, which meant thousands (millions?) of people travelling back to the country and then back all over the world. They also attempted to cover up the outbreak.

I really don't think we should be praising their government.

Neither do I.

Maybe I'm letting it skew my view too much then mate.

See my reply to Legs, hopefully that's put it better.

I accept that they have done things well but they also do things which are genuinely atrocious and go against most things that are fair and right in a democracy.

I'm not trying to excuse our government here, but I just don't think people should be actively praising the Chinese government.

Not unsafe just not proven on the data given.

How can anyone complain about a vaccine that is 80% effective all for less than a pint of fosters
These are vaccines were talking about here, not dolly mixtures. If the data doesn't back their roll out then they cant be safe.

To me I see it less as praising their government than seeing some effective methods and trying to figure out a way they could be implemented in a Western democracy. I don’t see that in conflict with criticism of their overall dictatorship.

I take the same view with other countries - both S Korea and Japan have handled the virus comparatively well despite having large, densely populated cities and I don’t think we have learnt enough lessons from them. Last I looked Vietnam was also doing OK well despite having much less resources.
