Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

It’s a difficult one because we should really be pushing for better than a 62% effective vaccine.

The UK has bought 40 million units of the Pfizer vaccine but I’m not sure when we’d receive that figure.

Why don’t we keep pressing on to get a better vaccine made here, and roll that out once it’s ready?

A 62% effective vaccine is good enough to give community protection though, at least against what’s going around now.

The fella on the briefing on sky said the first dose should offer 70% protection after the first dose, but he couldn't say anymore as the papers for that particular data hadn't been released yet. Either way, as far as I'm aware, that is still better protection than most flu vaccines. I'll take 70% all day if it gets us back to some semblance of normality.

Chair of JCVI Professor Wei Shen Lim said they would not recommend any preference over which vaccine should be given as there is no difference in protection.

He said: "It is not possible to compare the results from the different trials relating to the two different vaccines.

"The committee's advice is therefore individuals eligible for vaccination in the phase one programme in the UK, that both vaccines may be used with no preference for one vaccine above the other."

.... nonsense. They really don't help themselves with outright lies.

That presser raised more questions than it provided answers.

Seems like this has been rushed through without full and proper scrutiny.

The Government, it would seem, are well and truly rolling the dice.

To be fair, if you can read and are not a complete simpleton (not you, just people asking), then it seems fairly obvious that the Pfizer vaccine is the preferred one for most people with its 95% protection but the logistics of moving it around and storing are going to cause problems and delays. The AZ/Oxford vaccine is the one that's going to be the one the majority get. Either way its going to make a massive difference.

Indeed. So it's problematic that they aren't outright admitting that and presenting data honestly.

And unfortunately, confidence in the vaccines as a whole will now be dented due to this stupidity.

The vaccine, clearly, isn't ready. Not "unsafe", but not ready. There's too many questions, not enough answers.

I'm.pretty certain they said they went for 2nd dose between 4 and 12 weeks as it goes up to 80% efficacy

I disagree - it’s ready, but what they are asking it to do doesn’t seem thought through.

How so? It's in the public domain that the Pfizer jab gives 95% and the AZ one gives 62% (now revised up to 70%) by Professor Lim. They have updated information on both vaccines for pregnant women, people with allergies and so on? I think the problem with the AZ one is they have not released the data for the over 65s but that is coming early Jan/Feb.

In a perfect world we'd have full disclosure and years of testing as per usual. Unfortunately we don't seem to have the luxury and we will be learning on the fly. I think the countries on a knife edge at the moment, if we have to lock down again for another sustained period of time then we are going to be set back years economically (even more so than we already have been) and to an extent, I believe we are rolling the dice, but so will every other country in the developed world. Weather we should be rolling the dice is another question, but I believe most people would happily take either right now if it means the end of this misery.

EDIT: in regards to your point about transport, it has to be moved (and kept) at -70c. People shouldn't really need explaining too the problems this could cause.

I posted on here last week about my granda getting coronavirus 2 days before he got the vaccine. We have been told he's really ill an likely to pass away in next couple of days. I would give my right arm to have him get a vaccine that was "only" 62% efficient. Its not a competition its peoples life's at risk take whatever you can get an be thankful for it ffs.

Really sorry to hear that mate, I've lost family to this too and I have 2 seriously at-risk parents, I'm very much of the same opinion as you. Wait months for the Pfizer vaccine as has been suggested on here and potentially catch the thing in the meanwhile? Brilliant, brilliant advice.

The Pfizer vaccine causes huge logistical challenges and the roll out is very slow.

Use of the Oxford Vaccine will probably save 50,000+ lives over the next 6 months. A true miracle.

"Ready" isn't perhaps the right word. It might be ready to do "something", but it's not based on comprehensive research. It's being rushed out the door, and it just feels to me like having all the hallmarks of a political decision.

In my view, if this was purely a scientific call, they'd have pulled it and undergone more trials before releasing it to the public. Instead, they're doing more trials but releasing it to the public before knowing those results - which is irresponsible.

This is going to be a very tough sell now to many members of the public, and as I say I think it's happened because of Tory incompetence and desperation.
