Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

My post wasn't aimed at anyone specifically. I'm more concerned about the wellbeing of people than the economy itself but I know that everyone is in a different position with regards to how lockdowns will affect their circumstances.

People's individual situation will affect their views on how they feel the government should be dealing with the pandemic. I consider myself a caring person. I want them to lockdown until the vulnerable have all been vacinated but at the same time I can understand if someone was about to lose everything they'd ever worked for, they might not feel the same way.

Social/health/economic issues all fed into the same pot don't they.

I don't value money over life. But money is life if it's your own business, or your family you need to support, or if you work in the entertainment industry etc etc. It's one and the same.

Exactly.

It's wrong to assume someone doesn't care about others just because they have financial concerns. Most people would care about how both are being affected throughout the pandemic.

It’s Christmas so we can all go out and not care, that virus stuff can wait till we’ve celebrated.

not surprised it’s surging

also, doesn't it take 1-2 weeks for hospitalisations to occur after initially contracting the virus (as a rule of thumb).

For example, if lots of infections are recorded one week, then it'll be 10-12 days before the hospital figures reflect those figures.

So the current surge now is probably a reflection of pre-Xmas activities, not actually what's happened in the last week.

I'm worried about my mum and dad - and obviously my gran etc, and yes myself.

I'm also worried about losing my job again for the second time in the space of 9 months and having no support. If we have a lockdown and the sport goes again, then that's what's going to happen.

I also worry that once we get through this, what's actually gonna be left? You'd have to be a lunatic to try and open a business in hospitality or entertainment now.

Yep.

All we're seeing now is a result of Xmas shopping and people meeting up with friends before Xmas.

Most people are pre symptomatic for 5 days on average. If people are going to get seriously ill it's normally in the second week of symptoms.

Give it a week and cases will shoot up, another week and the amount of people in hospital will shoot up.

That's what's most worrying, we're not really seeing the damage Xmas has done in the figures yet.

There is benefit system to support people.

Not just health though is it it's people's lifes, maybe a family member or friend , you are potentially asking them to put their life aside for the sake of money.. Good of people to have their life volunteered in exchange of the economy. No higher consequence than a life. Even that's now a race to the bottom...

Have you had to use any of those systems? Because I have.

I didn't qualify for a penny. Not one bit mate - from furlough, or SEISS. Nada. Because of when I decided to go self-employed. There's 3 million people - at least - like me. And despite protests and pleas and petitions, there's no sign of extra support coming. I'm not looking for something for nothing, but I've had no help. It's easy if you're in a position where you either qualify for those benefits or you don't have to use them to just say 'the benefits are there'.

I had to go onto Universal Credit. £409 a month - maximum. And for every £ of earnings I declared (which I legally had to do), 63p was deducted.

I got something like £450 total in each of April and May - from a combination of a bit of work I managed to scrape together and UC. Luckily this time round I've saved for the last few months - majority has to pay my tax bill next month - and I do at least have a separate, part-time job that will give me some form of income. However, it isn't really enough to live off on its own, but because of it, I won't be able to claim UC.

Also, if you own your own business - especially in the hospitality trade (I know from my dad doing it nearly all of my life) - that business is your life. It's your home, it's your everything.

So no, you can't separate them off, and it isn't being selfish to have those concerns.

It's definitely a mutation that has been around ages and we're only now looking for it.

Shouldn't be causing any additional panic.

Panic isn’t the word I would use but I definitely think it warrants added caution as, at least to date, it does seem to be a more contagious strain. That may not turn out to be the case when all the evidence is in, as was the case with the Spanish strain earlier in the year, but in the absence of data erring on the side of caution is preferable seems wisest course of action.

And the Seattle guy who I’ve seen give the best information on different strains over the course of the year says I was wrong on it being here a while, at least in any significant level and believes that it is likely more contagious.

Definitely agree Legs. But it's the middle of winter in the northern hemisphere - should be cautious regardless of a new strain or not!

I just worry this will be used to halt further progress with vaccines/lockdown measures easing off in the spring etc.

Also, I'm not asking anyone to volunteer their life for the economy.

Economic/health/social - it's all part of the same thing. Each impacts the other greatly.
