I've had a rough year and was so optimistic about the vaccine being the beginning of the end.

This news is freaking me out.

In layman's terms can someone tell me whether it is more deadly, whether the vaccine is now irrelevant and whether a poster who said its going to be a [Poor language removed] 18 months from now is scare mongering?

I'm strong mentally but this is a hammer blow.
Don’t panic, GOT is chock full of medical experts and top scientific types who will put your mind at rest

They arent sure yet, they don't think so, but nobody REALLY knows

It wont be another 18months, either the vaccine works or we all die

We won't all die, it will be very similar to now with 99% of people fine and 1% at risk.

The damage will be mentally, another 12-18 months of this will be hard work even for the most positive people.

Is this new strain only in Britain or something?

Seems fairly unlikely I'd have thought. We've had flights in and out of the country every day.
From the brief bit I read earlier, there are spikes of it in other countries including Denmark, but models suggest it's probably came with some from the UK.

In layman's terms, the strain originated here and has been incubated in the UK hence the massive growth.

We will if it mutates into actual SARS.

But anyway, April/May things will be looking much better.
Its very unlikely that it will kill more. The worry is the increased spread being so difficult to stop.

The scientists seem confident that the vaccine will still work so hopefully it will be fine.

They only found out about the strain being more infectious this week. UK sequences 10% of ALL cases so they have an amazingly large database (one of the highest % of cases in Europe/world that get sequenced). After they found out about this variant in the last week, they looked through the database and the earliest patient with it was on the 20th of September. New variants rise and disappear all the time and we don't usually know how different they are epidemiologically wise. It was just this week that they found out this variant possibly changes the transmissibility.

I saw this post earlier, there's a theory that the only reason we "found it", is cos we look closer than anybody else.
