Germany’s lockdown strategy has failed. Germany has plunged into a crisis.

Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf says coronavirus approach 'has failed'. Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said he agreed with the king's remarks.

I’m sure I remember someone on here telling us these countries were the gold standard compared to our banana republic. What could possibly have gone wrong?
Sweden - when was that ever argued to be the gold standard other than by anti-lockdown loonies?

Germany: it is gold standard comapared with the UK Banana Republic:

Germany: population, 83M; Covid19 cases 1.4M; Covid19 deaths 25,000
UK: population 67M; Covid19 cases 1.95M; Covid19 deaths 66,000

An article in the Mirror is discussing a study by the University of Massachusetts. The study states that if you use a mask more than once the filtration reduces massively. A reused mask often has a 30% filtration efficiency which often results in similar performance to wearing no mask at all.
There should be some more information from the government on this. You have to be wearing a mask washed in an industrial washing machine at 90 degrees or a single use mask once. When you see people in the supermarket etc it is very obvious that these people are reusing masks.
One big finding from the study: the filtration efficiency of a three layer surgical mask varies from 65% when first used, down to use 25% on reuse.
Is there any way that supermarkets can check that these masks are clean prior to allowing entry into the building?
They could use their vast profits to supply them to every customer.

According to the woman on the door in my local Asda they’re not even allowed to challenge those not wearing masks, so good luck with that idea. I went in the other day for a few items (max 5 minutes), counted 7 adults without masks and none of them wearing exemption lanyards. It’s happening more and more imo.

The key finding from the article is that anyone who is wearing a worn mask is essentially as bad if not worse than the maskless. A large percentage of peiple are rewearing masks and its causing massive spread.

You will always get the deniers and the loonies but the majority would probably wear clean masks if they realised what they are doing. A dirty mask = massive covid spread.

This is the key difference between UK and countries in Asia. People in UK are rewearing masks and its causing huge viral transmission. This hasn't even been mentioned by the UK Media, its all very strange.

Because we all know that they take their lead from the Tories, and their implicit policy is herd immunity.

Filtration effect? But which way are they talking about.
The masks available to the general public are not expected to filter out incoming particles. They're to stop saliva and snot droplets leaving an infected person and passing on the virus to another person.
Ordinary, not medical surgical asks, are worn to give 10% protection to yourself but 90% protection to others.
How long is it going to take to get this fact into some people's heads.

Filtration works both ways for exhalation and inhalations?

Are you trying to say that people wearing filthy masks is a good thing?

This is a reputable study by a university.

How can this be true.
Surely any barrier to flying saliva particles of an infected person will reduce the spread of the virus.

The fibres of a mask can only hold so much before it starts letting the covid through (inwards or outwards). Masks clearly work IF they are clean, a fresh mask every time will save thousands of lives in the UK.

Not saying it's a good thing.
Saying that principle method of virus transmission is on spit and snot droplets exhaled when talking and6rven just breathing.
Anything reducing this flow will reduce rate of transmission.
I haven't read the article to which you refer. Remember that tabloid journos are not always the best interpreters of scientific publications.

I'm not an expert but it does make a lot of sense as people clearly reuse masks a lot in the UK.

Every study highlighting the benefits of masks is based on using new masks as well.
