WTF is going on when 75,000 people have died in agony in this country alone and someone thinks its "edgy" and or a "great laff" to call this a 'kin flu?

Do we have to put up with that? Loads on here have either lost someone close or know someone who's been killed.
Got to agree so much 75 thousand families destroyed, no joke!

I'd have thought in certain jobs the employers would make it compulsory. Do NHS front line staff get a choice for instance
I'm not sure what the legality of this would be apart from certain employers, where there's a position of the person obeying a legal orders to do so.

Still, I think it would need to be reviewed.

I’ve just asked my missus ( nurse ) mate and she says they haven’t been told either way.

Despite all they have seen, quite a few of her colleagues are on the fence about the vaccine.

What she did also say, is that they are gearing up for a third wave in January :(
Which is worrying in two ways: either their is legitimate questions over the vaccine or there's a growing percentage of NHS staff who have countering views.

In terms of the third wave, I suspect with Christmas and the prevalence of the virus in some regions then a growth in cases and deaths is nigh on inevitable.

We're hunkering down as a family as we've decided that it's one day in the year, which happens every year, so it's not worth jeopardising our long-term plans.

Can any of the Covid = flu people explain these stats please?
Any counter argument involving a friend’s niece on Facebook been told they tested positive when they never had a test, shall be disregarded.

One, those are averages, so we could be in a "bad" year which would counteract "good" years.

Two, the severity of influenza varies every year. Whilst there's no evidence at all to suggest we're getting a mad flu outbreak this year, it's still a possibility.

Three, and possibly the most valid one - COVID deaths are officially anyone who dies while having COVID, not necessarily because of COVID. So there are legitimately a lot of instances where people have died with COVID as a co-morbidity and the distinction hasn't been made.

Four, the lockdowns have resulted in more people dying through other means. Of course, this would ignore the fact thousands have been saved from fewer outdoor accidents, car collisions and so on, but still a raw "excess death" figure can't be blamed on one thing without further investigation.

... all that said, I obviously don't believe any of those things are good counter-arguments. I list them simply to show that it's possible to look at other views, give them an analysis and disregard them if not evidence-based.

The truth is the pandemic is real, COVID is a bigger killer than flu, much more virulent and conspiracy theories about it are wrong.

The ones on the fence are just as daft as the rest of the population. Despite working in a major hospital and seeing first hand what’s going on, they’re still listening to idiots on the likes of Facebook, who know someone who’s ears dropped off the last time they had the flu jab and their kids went blind when they had the MMR.

Just because they work in a hospital don’t make the mistake of thinking they are any less daft than the rest of the population !

Ps - her brother is a GP, they’ve been told to work to a timeline of April before all the vulnerable people and over 60’s are all vaccinated.

So it looking like Easter before things start returning to any semblance of normality.

I would argue that as all other nations have experienced (varying degrees) of excess mortality, would pretty much invalidate those arguments.

Also worth noting the excess mortality rates in the U.K. compared to Germany as some sort of indicator as to how badly we have dealt with this.

It’s quite weird comparing countries. Right from the beginning I suggested that while we were putting everything down as Covid, Germany was under reporting Covid deaths and putting them down to other issues. If you look at the deaths from both waves, the U.K. second wave had a lower peak and lower (so far) total deaths, Germany by comparison has a lower first wave followed by a higher second wave. Most other countries whose numbers you would tend to trust had similar patterns to the U.K. irrespective of total numbers. My guess would still be that Germany under reported the first wave and is now reporting Covid deaths as others are doing.....but then again, no one seems to know what this bleeding virus is doing to us.....

Looks like we’ll be getting a third wave......
Went down my local town centre yesterday and it was heaving. There were large groups of non locals congregating outside many of the local hotels. Shops and cafes were packed. No social distancing going on and very few masks.

I can only imagine what major city centres are like this weekend.

There is deffo a 3rd wave coming with another full lockdown after Christmas.
