Sake. Read that North Somerset is in with Bristol and South Gloucestershire, hence Tier 3.

S. Glos is effectively the northern suberbs of Bristol, like that place where that rave was the other week. Thanx bell ends.
I think there are a couple of reasons why Cornwall and the IOW have been singled out for tier 1, in addition to the relatively low infections.

Firstly, neither district has any large urban conurbations where you would normally find much higher rates of infection. Even our one City, Truro, only has a population of 20k which is lower than most small towns. Secondly, we are both isolated to a large degree. IOW is an island and Cornwall is bordered by an equally rural Devon, so it is highly unlikely that there will be droves of people breaking county lines for nights out in our pubs and restaurants. Also Devon itself is in tier 2, so people can still go to most pubs and restaurants anyway.

With the likes of yourself and Pete, you have been penalised (for want of a better word) for your close proximities to large cities in tier 3, and I'm sure that's the same with the rest of the country. You practically called it yourself. How do you stop the bell ends invading your pubs and restaurants because theirs have been closed down. It defeats the object of having tier 3 if all people do is travel 10 miles down the road.

Its more to do with what NHS Trust we are in than anything else. If the cases in Bristol impact on the hospitals that would be the destination point for me, then I am fine with that, cos I would much rather be in that hospital than the ones in the neighbouring Trust.

The other thing is the large number of kids from Bristol who bus into Portishead every day cos the comp is brilliant, and Bristol ones aint all that. But so far, that hasnt seemed to manifest itself in cases, as far as I know anyrate.

...

Unfortunately. I was discussing it with our pub manager this morning. We thought we would be tier 2 and decided to remain closed anyway. But we hoped that we may have been moved to tier 1 for Xmas. That’s obviously not going to happen now.....
If you do get moved to tier 2 Pete why don't you put on food?. I know you said that it wouldn't be worth the cost of extra staff etc, but you could very easily just provide some simple food like scouse, chile, quorn chile, plain rice and maybe some chips. You could probably dish this out for £1 a serving and still cover costs. The food could even be prepared the day before. You wouldn't need extra staff.

Yeah

I was just trying to offer some thoughts on why there are so few areas in tier 1 in England, given lots of smaller districts have very low infection levels.

Not speaking on behalf of Pete - but a lot of older pubs just don't have the facilities to offer food. My local (which is very old and very small) rigorously adhered to government guidelines throughout, but doesn't have kitchen facilities so has been shut for months - until it inevitably closes down I guess

Mission accomplished for the Tories

why would the tories want to shut pubs?

Yeah it isn’t as simple as sticking a deep fat fryer in and ‘hey presto’. Pubs need to have proper kitchens which have been signed off by H&S before they can serve food. Plenty wouldn’t be able to meet the basic requirements for anything above a 1 on the hygiene standards (stuff like ventilation to a kitchen if preparing hot food) to make it even viable.

Pubs wont open now - not the bulk of them.

Thanks. We did go through all that, and I agree if you can put something on for £1-2 then that would be fine. The problem being the no mixing of families, so if myself and four mates go in, instead of sitting at one table as we could under tier 1, we would have to sit at 5 different tables. We had already reduced the number of tables because of Covid and the pub just simply isn’t big enough... it really isn’t worth the effort and cost.....
