Crazy really. Every pub spent money making their places Covid secure. No one was allowed in without there being a seat for them. Masks and sanitizers were the order of the day, drinks were served at the table. The boss of Greene King said that out of over 1500 pubs they only had 40 incidences of track and trace. We spent about £20K (materials only) making everything Covid secure friendly. We even changed every single seat in the pub to ones that could be easily cleaned with sanitizer after every customer. Our pub was more sanitised and secure than any doctors surgery or hospital, and was running safely with our customers behaving in an exemplary manner. But of course they will now put everyone into tier 2 or tier 3. Even though we have a working kitchen we are predominantly a wet trade pub and it is simply not worth the effort and additional staffing costs involved in putting out a few meals because the trade won’t be there. Even those pubs that do regular meals will find it difficult because the rule of 6 has gone and each table can only house the same family. It‘s a bit of a buggers muddle really......
But there were also a lot of pubs that made no effort.

So because the government says you can see them for 4 days over Christmas it’s ok.

Honestly can’t believe people are going for this rubbish.
If it’s ok to see them for a few days over Christmas it’s been ok to see them the whole time.

it’s ridiculous.
Why?... I'll gloss over the fact that you should even ask why.
Because...

Nothing Propinks like Propinquity.

If they weren`t so incompetent, you`d think that this was their plan all along - make it so pointless opening up, that the majority won`t bother.

However, it`ll also mean that the ones that could open and don`t won`t be eligible for financial support, as it`s their choice no open.

It's as if someone nuked his Iran and Pete's an innocent for once.

I‘m not really that bothered tbh, it’s saving me money. But the pub trade in general is taking an unnecessary battering, the brewers are making thousands redundant and those pubs, unlike ourselves, who need the income may well go under. Once gone they will never return....

It’ll work for many in London and the cities and larger towns. The small country pubs, where there was no issue to begin with will be the ones to suffer....

I’m not sure that’ll be the case, it’s an interesting thought mind, but those that reopen and find it doesn’t work out will then have to get staff back onto furlough again. The financial support isn’t a great deal, but if you are paying rent then it could be a life saver. It’s a shambles....

Second update on hospitals.

The plan is to switch the test from the normal to the lateral type and test clinical staff more than once a week to keep on top of positive cases.

The numbers In the hospital have halved and stand at around 250 give or take , down from 450 or so.
The hospital I work in started this yesterday. Every member of staff who regularly comes into contact with patients will be given this week a box of 25 lateral tests to do at home twice a week. Each came with an individual QR code we had to scan which registered our details before taking it.

Joking aside, it sounds like you're doing the right thing, but government policy of centralising power has caused the leopard to eat your face. Soz abart dat.

It's been obvious that local empowerment was the right way to go from the off. Given firm instructions from the government (not guidelines) the inspectors that know you and other hospitality businesses could have graded you all and dealt with it accordingly.

You're in a good position, like a few others, whereby you own your establishment outright. As I'm sure you're aware, a hell of a lot don't, from individuals through to chains and this is borne from economic policy that doesn't exist elsewhere. European business is far less exposed to these shocks than ours.
