Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

One of my mates who holds a reasonable position within goverment (albiet local) has mentioned that the contingency plans they have in place are for the 2nd to come, and an announcement to be made that certain businesses will be allowed to open on the 14th depending on infections, (2 more weeks of 'lockdown' without too much upset as people could see an end). Then the tier system to be in place. After the new year depending on the circumstances if infections rise then back to lockdowns until the end of March.
Thats what the current thinking had been 2 weeks ago when we were talking, he'd had been in meetings that day and the higher ups were adamant that senior goverment didn't want to be seen as the people who cancelled Xmas, the Tory goverment see this as political suicide. Give the proletariat & plebs what they want, if it goes tits up it wasn't there fault and if the majority of the populance got to see their family and have a blow out they will be more likely to accept restrictions in the New Year.

At this stage to open up pubs, resteraunt, leisure etc... you'd need around at least two weeks notice to get orders increase stock, clean, brew beer at the level required to placate the xmas market, bring staff back and even then there would be some resistance from some pubs themselves to open when there would be a likelihood of closing again within 3 weeks. Although the money to be made at Xmas/New year is essential to these businesses, the covid restrictions in place might not make them viable to open and make the profits they would normally expect at this time of year.

Although at this moment with the potential vaccines in the New Year being mooted and Cummings and Cain being hoofed to touch, the landscape around this may change again, 2 weeks is a century in politics in 2020.
I can see that happening quite easily.

However, it really isn't a great policy to stop and start after weeks; SAGE have said that will be the worst of all worlds: it'll both reduce the impact of locking down (essentially hospitality and retail) and it'll undermine the discipline required to lockdown.

We need more places locking down rather than reopening shops and pubs and restaurants to make any lockdown work.

I think this is what a few of us on here have been saying, target the lockdown while ensuring the economy continues. I would however add a rider in that those parts of the economy that continue, and in the case of Tesco etc to improve, then the exchequer should use their current/increased profitability to provide further assistance to those targeted for lockdown. Everyone needs to take a small hit. We need every sector to comes out of this still functioning...
Good public health management always works with economic interests and scientific interests simultaneously.

Things like this make me confused about the rules. Regardless of being tested beforehand surely we should all be promoting the correct behaviour when millions of people are watching?

It`s no different that footy players, jumping all over each other when a goals been scored or a load of rugby players all over each other during the game.

Everyone knows that they`ve all been tested beforehand.

Plus it clearly states that they`ve all been tested and the camera crew are socially distanced ???

Common sense is ringing out the bell.

What's your definition of "distanced"????

They were tested and I’m sure for the most part they socially distanced.

Football has been happening for months, so has recording for countless Tv shows as well as filming for various movies.

As long as the people involved have been tested and distance for the most part then it’s fine.

@peteblue what`s the word on the street about pubs re opening ?

I know the little real ale brewery up the road from me are ready to go for the first week in Dec.

They were the only ones ready locally for the first week of the last lockdown and cleaned up.

I don't see the problem with this. The risk to them is almost zero. The most depressing year of everyones lives with covid mentioned in every media outlet constantly, seeing some normality can be a good thing.
