Surely viral infections spread around care homes quite a bit, though?

The one my mum used to work in was often in states of 'lockdown' for a week or so if there was a bug going round.

Maybe it suggests that COVID - like a lot of viruses - can spread in other ways? Or maybe the incubation period is longer than they thought? Just thinking out load mate!

The main virus that can normally circulate round care homes is influenza, which, compared to COVID, isn't so infectious and for which there is a relatively effective vaccine.

High infectivity plus no vaccine, plus asympomatic transmission means if COVID gets into a care home, even with really good levels of infection control, there's still a fair chance it'll spread.

How do you stop it getting in the first place ?

  1. Most importantly - Have low levels of the virus in the community.
  2. Test anyone working there regularly and get the results to them pdq
Not being great on (2) isn't too bad as long as (1) doesn't kick off.

Insane.

A code error in the NHS Covid-19 app meant users had to be next to a highly infectious patient for five times as long as the NHS had decided was risky before being instructed to self-isolate, the Guardian has learned.

The problem was only discovered last week, when software engineers rewrote how the app decides who needs to isolate and discovered it had been relying on faulty maths since its launch in September.

He’s left quite a bit out there.

Like the bit where the people of Liverpool are to be “ offered regular “ tests if “ they want them “

The way he presents things are that it will be compulsory ( like that would ever happen in Liverpool ) and then throws in some pictures of the military, just to raise the scare level up a notch.

Showing the military is a deliberate action as there was/is quite a bit of concern about the perception of military on the streets - particularly as we've just gone into lockdown and people would get jittery if they suddenly saw 2000+ military arriving in the area.

Mass testing like this could really bring the infection rate down if everyone complys and self isolates. I get the feeling not enough people will though
It is dependent upon community adoption and people adhering to isolation. The accompanying brief for MAST is talking about changes needed for supported isolation if that is set to increase.

Just because of the numbers mate. There is an article in the guardian about how they mass tested an area of Italy. The local population complied and isolated. Within a couple of weeks they had eradicated the virus
Yeah but Liverpool has a lot of people who dont care, wont test and wont isolate, they must know this, I dunno, the idea is sound but I think they have picked the wrong area.
