Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Well it's too late to shut the unis now, because all that does is haul a load of students back around the country. They should never have been opened to begin with.

Schools are different though - kids need to be in education. They were right to open them up in some capacity, but there were other options they could have taken to negate the impact (i.e. make masks mandatory quicker, or perhaps reduce capacity so it is certain year groups in on certain days).

There were options rather than kids losing two years of their education. It's not right.

And have they shut schools in any other country? I don't know, so it's a genuine question.

Btw, I imagine schools will shut, but they may coincide it closer to the Christmas holidays, which may end up being 4 or 5 weeks this year.

'KEEP THEM SHUT' is such a daft statement because lockdown and shutting everything down is no solution. They should be using this time to get track and trace fully up and running (it does seem to be getting there) so lockdown isn't needed again in the new year
Wouldn't this be the best time to close unis though while we're in lockdown. And don't most students go home at Christmas anyway ?.

How are over 85 year olds catching it? Presumably in hospitals and care homes with the virus brought in by relatively young adults who have no idea they have it.

That still baffles me.

Unless we have been told a big fat lie, (not that far fetched), where and how are old folk getting infected?

It's all ok people. Curry's is staying open for collections! Labelled as non-contact delivery where you just pop the boot open and then they can sneeze-i mean place the goods inside the car. So that's a relief.

What with all these shops still working and places of education open we'll get a grip of the virus by Christmas...

...2021.

Some on here say that Yougov is not much more than a Government sponsored polling thing. Unless it supports their view of the world.

But I would say that poll is a reasonable picture of how a lot of us Brits think. Govt have been dead poor at TTI in particular, and the messages have been confusing at times.

Media have been awful as well. But personal responsibility seems to have been given a free hand.

Its a disgrace that hospitals are infecting a lot of the elderly- they should be one of the kin cleanest places going.

Perhaps but all it's doing is 1000s of students living in shared accomodation are going to be spreading back around the country (obviously not everybody, but a lot of people). That's just going to risk making things worse, surely?

A care home down here has been locked down after 45 residents tested positive.

They said they were taking all the recommended measures etc.

Something not right there.

Is it possibly just like any other virus - because it targets areas of weakness in people?

Any person can get ill, but using flu as an example, are the rates of flu more in older people than they are in younger ages? So could this just be like that? I don't know, just thinking out loud, so to speak!

Hospitals are always one of the top places to catch infections mate, it's why you should try to limit admissions as a last resort and make it as brief as possible.

This was always the case even before Covid. You'd be staggered to see the amount of people admitted for one reason only to develop an unrelated infection on wards to pass away. Its generally people with impaired immune systems and older people but the risk is greater across the spectrum.

Hospitals aren't significantly spreading this virus, the aim needs to be to keep people out of hospital as much as possible

Hospitals in my experience are generally very clean places however it must be noted that they were better when the cleaning staff was in-house and regarded as part of the team rather than unaccountable outsourced agency workers.
