A big problem this government will have is keeping the nurses and doctors on board and motivated.

Every winter these people are already pushed to the limit, due to lack of ICU beds and low staffing levels.

You can’t just motivate people to overcome impossible odds. It doesn’t matter how many ventilators we build if there aren’t enough staff to operate them, and there are not. It’s also not a simple thing to be trained on. And who will train them ?

Indeed. I know @Joey66 has advocated scrapping degrees for nurses, but those working in ICU are very highly trained. They could bring people back who have prior experience there, with my wife being among them, but by her own admission she would be very rusty, which given the nature of the work is not ideal.

What's next though the world will never be the same again i think something truely catastrophic is just around the corner been saying to the misses for a couple years now that the world can't go on like this it's just insane then this virus comes around and nearly stops the world from turning this is just the beginning mark my words

There's only one thing to do in that case mate - start your own doomsday cult. Be ahead of the curve.

Anyone else yearning for the good old days when all we had to worry about was our starting eleven and the revelation that Gordon the Gopher's dad has a penchant for a bit of bum fun?

Exactly if they learnt the trade at technical College nearby like the old days with onsite training while qualifying, it's quicker cheaper , and sort the bookworms, from the skilled with their hands ..... the college's used to be near hospital or indeed on site .
A 3 year degree at university is it necessary? Without practice training......or just minimum practical basics......

U.K. - doing a massive U turn, looks like they got their figures and approach massively wrong and are changing complete tact.

Hopefully its timely enough to make an impact.

Politically heads need to roll though, weeks wasted and likely lives lost.

So that's me off work for 2 weeks now in isolation.

Even though I told them I'm healthy and we don't have the virus at all in the house, as per guidelines they advised me to come home.

Least that's covered for if/when I have to self isolate in the future.

Largely yes, because nurses spend time on numerous different wards during their training. The requirements of neuro are very different to ICU or A&E, so if you want to work in these areas without having spent any time in them during your training, it will be tough. As it is, nurses spend probably half of their training on wards, so it is very hands on, but there is nonetheless a lot of brain work required also.

I'm working from home as of today but my partner works in the hospital and has asthma.

People need to remember that the NHS isn't filled with altruistic people who don't care about themselves and would die for any patient.
It's filled with normal people who have elderly parents, kids with immune system disorders, or health issues themselves.
The government should be bending over backwards to give these people the protective equipment needed to keep themselves and their families safe while they carry out their important work - otherwise all the tiny cogs that turn and make the NHS machine work will start to A) get sick themselves or B) self isolate to keep their families safe.
NHS staff should be given temperature checks as they arrive for work, masks to wear while they carry out their duties and above all else, COVID testing regularly.
The country depends on these people and our government is putting them in harms way and STILL expecting them to be selfless.

As an aside, ALL visiting should be cancelled for the foreseeable future. Make special exceptions for those saying goodbye to loved ones and new dads - but still perform temperature checks at the doors and masks for them to wear inside.

Aren't resources strained on a normal day anyway? No way they'll be able to cope with what's about to happen
