Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

There was a table the other month detailing if you have covid , the flu or a cold.

Most of the flu / covid columns were extremely similar , only difference between the odd one was rare or uncommon.

I'd imagine further into winter there will be far more isolation / tests because you can't really tell for the most part what you have. I know where I work if I have any sort of symptom is off to test and isolate.

Last month I had to have my daughter tested and had to isolate, results came back 09:10am, emailed to work, had a call 10 minutes later basically saying get your arse into work then lol

Yeah I'm not trying to lessen it. I wouldn't have even tried to get a test if not for my housemate. I just assumed it was a bug but obviously took precautions. She checked with the hospital and they wouldn't let her go in until I got a test.

I tried to book on Thursday night (for Friday), no appointments came up, and that was after me lying about my symptoms in order to get to that stage. The NHS trust she works for rang me up on Friday and gave me permission/instruction to go and get a test so they could get her back to work.

But other than that, I guess I wouldn't have known what to do. I would have just had to isolate until I felt better (already feeling a load better today), but then how would I have ever known what it really was?

I would imagine the amount of flu jabs has decreased this year also, with most vulnerable people self-isolating more than usual.
You'll struggle to get hold of one. I get one each year because of my job, but it's been difficult to get hold of one even through my GP.

That's either because there is a shortage of the vaccine or more people are taking it - as it's been suggested to me.

Which is what I said earlier on in the year.

Expecting the whole world to self isolate with every cold they have is unworkable.

Never had 1 before myself, but I've tried this year and had no luck so far.

Hubby and I usually get ours in Oct as walk in’s to our medical centre.

But now have to book in advance and no apts free until mid December

Ive just come home and it wasn’t rammed in the slightest.

Now, I'm a country bumpkin, so anywhere with more than ten people looks busy to me, but looking at the background in his video it doesn't look rammed by city standards.

I'd be rather tempted to file Inzy under F for Fuckwit.

You'd be wrong mate. Take up of flu jabs in the elderly is well above normal levels for this time of year, and slightly above normal for younger, vulnerable people.

@BlueToff from my experience the main symptoms are the well publicised coughing, temperature and lack of smell, but other fairly common examples have been:
  • Severe headaches,
  • Upset stomach (diarrhoea),
  • Aches with a particular interest in back, shoulders and neck.
Even with the coughing symptom for example, people often incorrectly believe it needs to be a regular and terrible cough, when in reality it can be a tickle.

We've, like the trust you have mentioned, gone to a blanket 'get tested if there's any doubt', but we have that capability; sadly, lots of people don't have that option.

My dad had no issue getting one a few weeks ago.

God knows how I've got ill. Not seen him or my mum in person in 2 weeks or so and other than that have been in an office two days a r

Yeah, I don't really know how it would have worked mate. It's obviously a massive relief not to have it, but at no point was I actually thinking I did until the moment I could hardly sit up on Thursday afternoon.

Test was easy and efficient enough once booked etc, and easy to do yourself.

On the flu jab - my dad got one pretty easily last week. Could it depend on area?

Do people not understand the numbers?

the daily figures are doubling roughly every 9 days. by CHRISTMAS DAY that means it goes from c25k daily cases to c1.5m daily cases.

if everyone in the country gets it once that’s 900k deaths.

how are people not understanding what this all means? why aren’t people grasping how serious this is. If it was March, fair enough. But it’s October.

Thanks mate.

Yep, the issue with the online testing system is the only symptoms down are:

- persistent cough
- fever
- loss of taste/smell

I get why that's the case but unfortunately it means people lying to even get through to the bit where you can see if there's any tests available. Ironically the only reason I even had to get a test was because of my housemate so that's obviously why the NHS trust gave me that specific instruction.

I went to do it in Dewsbury, which is the nearest one, and wasn't prioritised or anything, but if I hadn't been able to book there the person I spoke to said I'd just have to go to Sheffield and they'd test me there.

Weird situation but I do at least have that peace of mind! Not that it matters much now anyway, back into lockdown and all that!

The frustration is that we knew this a month ago, more.

The government could have got ahead with a lockdown that was inevitable and that may have saved weeks (and lives).

As it is, they tried a tier system which has worked a bit but also was clearly unsustainable and just dragged out businesses going down and job losses/redundancies etc.

It also just means - and this is where the rest of europe comes in - that there's once again no light at the end of the tunnel, nine months after this thing came to light.

EDIT: I say all this while hating the fact we need lockdown and also appreciating why the government wanted to avoid one. It just seemed inevitable.

In simple terms: they're either not capable or bothered enough to listen to the data or they're happy to ignore said figures because of their own whims and desires.

It's like the much discussed only 1%. Well 1% of 70,000,000 is 700,000 and that's if everyone only got it once and the virus population did not grow.

Conveniently stood with a queue in the background, thus % of airtime with a person in view will increase.
