Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Right, okay so you've admitted there than none of the govs current rules are that bad then if you're not being hindered in any way except a couple of hobbies that aren't critical you whatsoever.

So what do you propose the gov should do that allows these things now? (bold)

If you have no answer then you can't complain.

They were examples off the top off my head.

Why do you live mate? Seriously. What do you enjoy doing? You just seem to be happy to 'exist' - as you put it. What's the point?

For the things in bold to come back, we're going to have to come out of these measures completely. That will need to happen at some point - not for the things in bold but just for life in general to return to normality.

My point is the virus is still going to be here this time next year (there's a general consensus on this is there not?), so come 2021 (spring time), how do we kick stuff back into full action. A vaccine would have to be some miracle to be widespread by then, surely?

So in the meantime, you're looking at thousands of people out of work, businesses going under etc, livelihoods ruined.

So that's my complaint.

Store cleaners can only do so much...

It's the dirty b***ards that don't wash their hands that leave their 'faecal matter' everywhere...

Traces of faeces have been found on every single McDonald’s touchscreen swabbed in an investigation by metro.co.uk.

Aye, you just cant trust people... Lock it down!

I like to play football, go hiking, eat out, go on holidays, go to the cinema, photography, gaming etc. All of which are available to me right now.

Just because I'm calling you out for being a whiny bitch doesn't mean I just exist I'm just more than happy to pause my life to help save others.

Only thing I can't do right now is shagging which I'm fine missing for a while whilst the world battles a pandemic.

I'm not being a whiny bitch at all. I have put my life on pause and will continue to do so. I am following the rules, as daft as they are, taking precautions, putting symptoms in every day on the covid symptoms app, even when I feel fine. I'm trying to do my bit.

I'd just like to see some signs of a way out of this - just some form of a plan.

People being banned from buying a frying pan seems a pretty pathetic way of trying to fight it.

Btw, through this, you've come across as an absolute prat with a complete inability to feel any empathy for several people in here who lost their jobs, or were having to choose between keeping their life/work going and their health. Maybe look at yourself, too, before calling others out.

I'm glad you can do all the things you enjoy, btw. That's great. I'm being sincere. Hopefully we can all do the things we enjoy soon and we'll be able to have lives beyond just breathing, again. I haven't been able to go and see my mum and dad in two weeks, but hopefully it'll be worth it come the new year!

Last few pages have been a mess here.

If people want to moan about not being able to do things they enjoy then let them. What’s the issue? I can’t go the match, my game of football has been cancelled, I can’t go the boozer and I’ve had three holidays binned off. It’s rubbish, you can’t expect people to be happy with the situation and crack on in ignorance.

But why do I keep seeing BLM crop up in this thread. What does that have to do with anything?

I think it was just in relation to the protests being deemed as socially acceptable because of the cause (obviously a worthy cause). I'm not sure, though.

I'll get to talking about footy (and being clueless with that too :) )

This stresses me out too much, clearly, and I shouldn't get worked up over a stranger telling me I'm a whiny bitch for suggesting it'd be nice to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

COYB and all that, and I'm aware people have it much worse than me. A prominent poster wasn't allowed to be there for a family member in a time of need because of the stupid, illogical rules brought in to tackle this thing, and that's not right.

But I'll stay away from this thread from now on!

Life is tough at the minute.

I have my mum in hospital back in Liverpool and she is allowed no visitors. I was meant to be away this week on holiday but stuck at home self isolating as my wife has covid-19.

It's crap, but we will get through it.

We need bad times to appreciate the good things in life.

I appreciate what you're saying, and sorry to hear about your mum.

I've lost a family member too though thankfully (sounds horrid I know) nobody close to me.

I know we'll get through it, I just want to see some proper action.
Will leave it at that though.

I did not mean to be so flippant.

They locked down too late and wasted the summer and they'll lockdown too late and waste Christmas. Party of the incompetent not of the economy.

I think it's less the idea of died anyway and more cause of death. The official lines are pretty clear in blurring the line between what is died of and died with.

I don't think that 90% stat is that true, I would love to read about that a little bit more if you have a link to it. I guess the morality in that would be that not dying within this time period is not necessarily a marker of would have died at some point, in a rather specific way. Take my nan for example, what she died of took months to take its toll on her and almost to the extent for a long time we just didn't notice anything. When she did go into hospital then it was clear she wasn't coming back out again. Using covid in that example , it would have killed her in the current period but it wouldn't have struck down a healthy person either.

There is a lot of information like this we don't and will never have access to to make a sweeping statement. At the same time we don't know how many in similar circumstances were not 'dying' in that sense but also not on borrowed time either. If that makes any sense? It takes me back to the Eddie large example, he was nowhere near a well man by the time he died but officially covid was cause of death. Someone with multiple heart failures over a 20 year period is not comparable to say my friends parents who are in good health at a similar age.

Going back to the point I made after that sidetrack. There are a lot of figures that have dropped on that time , much the same way I expect given the large cause of underlying issues, dementia will see a significant drop this year compared to previous years on average, same as next year's figures might reflect that. It's a long term idea that is simply still in the short term. You can't say for a fact this or that , simply reflect the data.

So there may be a picture 18 months from now that reflects a different story to all of this. Because the easy answer is to sit life and death as black or white but quality of life , playing off the average age of death is another factor that we really don't know. It doesn't apply to every case and it may not apply to that many cases either. We just don't know that and never will.

Because that's the issue with numbers, they are just that. I admit I base my opinion now on them but they don't tell the full story, only we can.

Noone can yet say categorically <x> thousand died who would have died soon anyway, or even that <y> thousand died who wouldn't have died within <insert timeframe of your choice here>.

Not least because, to take the respiratory disease example a bit further, it's not a straight swap between ~4000 less respiratory deaths over the last five months and some of the previous COVID deaths. In the same way that a small minority of the COVID deaths would be people who died with COVID rather than because of COVID ( down to doctors making a judgement, and being fallible ), there will be some people alive today because of lockdown changing their way of life to make their lifestyle healthier, who would have died if they'd lived their normal life.

Quality of life is always a tough one. In your twenties, it's not easy to understand how someone in their 70's who's a bit frail can be content with their life, but simpler pleasures become more important as you get older, so it's mostly impossible to judge ( there are obviously exceptions to that, where quality of life is virtually nil ).

As you say, we won't know the full story on excess deaths until COVID is pretty much fully controlled, but we do know that, right at this point in time, 10's of thousands have died earlier than they normally would have done. It might be that most of those wouldn't have survived this winter, especially if it was a cold one and/or a really bad flu year.

But, as COVID deaths are now running at over 1000 a week in the UK, it seems unlikely we'll continue to see below excess deaths over the next couple of months, so it's looking less likely that the 12 month average will trend back to norm.

Not saying nymz is one of them but there are loads like that. they are ok with not dying, just existing, doing nothing, enjoying nothing, constantly living in fear. For them is every day they wake up to is a plus because they are alive. I have never felt like that, if I can't fill a day, then it's awful. If I can fill my next 5 years to the fullest, I am ok with being dead at 33, but if I will be living miserably, not enjoying anything I originally love, 80 years won't cut it, it can go to a bin.
