The thing is, the admissions are high but the turnaround has been far quicker (i.e. we do know a lot more about treating this illness than we did in March). Unfortunately for some people - especially the vulnerable in terms of breathing issues etc - that's not the case. But my friend's mum who was in with it last week was literally in a day or so, and they were happy she'd be okay.

Her dad had died from it two days before like so hardly a reprieve.

@ToffeeTim I agree with you on a lot politically, and in relations to covid.

I think Sunak did a good job at the start of this.

Right now, he's as bad and as clueless as the rest of them.

I do like Rishi a lot. On the wage front, the scheme was pretty much as good as can be expected.

But on the self employed side there's been issues definitely. Its a far harder thing to get right as payrolls are relatively straightforward in comparison as they are under RTI. But he could definitely have relaxed the rules or done some sort of means tested grant for others who fell between the cracks.

I think he wanted something with clear guidelines so the revenue could easily implement it because it needed done so fast. Maybe some form of appeals system should have been allowed too for others. As with all things covid, there are few easy answers, but its little consolation to those in your position.

Yet another Tory who says he will 'balance the books'. They have been in government for 10 years and have yet to do so. Before the pandemic he was going to cut benefits :

He was the 'brains' behind the just eat scheme and we know how that turned out.
He said he will 'do whatever it takes', yet the new furlough scheme pays 22% of net salaries compared to Germany's 60%-87% - look behind the smarm.

Hes done very well as chancellor. Our original scheme was more generous than most places, including Germany.

I like him. I have absolutely no political alignment. I have never voted tory. I just like people who are pragmatic rather than ideological.

The rest of the government a complete mess. Not fit for office.

What got me mate is they did a second round of SEISS which ran up until October 9th.

But it used exactly the same criteria as it did in March. So basically, 3 million odd people (including myself) were just again basically told to shove it.

If you didn't qualify in March, then you didn't this time, yet people who did qualify in March were given more support (which is fine, but why not include the rest, or at least find a mechanism that can include them).

You're better with numbers than I am, but surely given we're now halfway through the tax year, then there could have been a way to do it based on the 19-20 returns which are due in January (as it stands, I have no idea how I'm going to pay that as my savings have been wiped out. I'm hoping that one or two good payslips in the coming months will cover it, but i'm going to owe a few grand. And deferring it equals more interest).

They'll have not factored in 19 20 returns because they aren't due for filing till January. But absolutely no reason why they couldn't let people file early and use that return as the basis for the grant. Totally fair point and I see no reason why it wasn't feasible.

What noone seems to point out.

Genuine home run pubs that people call their livelyhood will go under with these rules. People's businesses will just go under, especially if they drag it out over months. That's not just one person, that's families affected , children, lose more than just a pub when they have no means to make money. The jobs scheme doesn't cover actual income for businesses does it not and many of them will have had the loan already . Which of course needs to be paid back.

However weatherspoons , the UK chain will thrive under these conditions. Business will be booming all over the country. They may even be able to buy up some prime locations once their former owners are cleaned out by the banks.

Another ramification of these regulations.

And who in their right mind is going to want to open an independent business in the next 12 months?

Weatherspoons for one. The majority of the pub customers will end up going there. I'd go there if I was a drinker, cheap drink, reasonable food and most importantly , open
