Italy is banning travel to and from an area of about 50,000 people southeast of Milan and canceling top-flight soccer games to combat the spread of the coronavirus, while safeguarding Europe’s internal open-borders pact.
The emergency plan, announced by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte late Saturday, stepped up the government’s response as the number of cases rose to 76, including two deaths, making Italy the country with the
most infections in Europe. Local authorities can call in the military to enforce the quarantine if needed, the government said in a statement.
