Sense or not mate, if the measures go some way to making sure your mum’s still here in 6 months then.........
The thing is my mum will probably be going the pub, going to work , going shopping with hundreds of others etc.

If my mum was to get sick and pass from this , the chance of it being my fault is very small like in comparison.

People did follow the rules really well for about 3 months. But it was inevitable things would gradually slip. A full year of restrictions is just mad.

Mental that the only solution these jobbers (scientists included) was draconian measures and 'rules' of lockdown.

It is what it is, but it's 2020 and it's wiped out - as you say - a year.

What governments have imposed on their populations (and the UK have done relatively okay in this regard compared to Spain and Italy etc) has been nothing short of ludicrous. It had to be done, but how we got into such a position in the first place is mental.

There's no solution coming to this soon so what's the point? Next six months is to get us in the UK through the flu season. Yet in France and Italy they've got crowds back yet death rates there are still rising too.

All haphazard, nobody has a clue. And the thing is, there's no real way of saying for certain lockdown works until we're out of it. But every country seems too scared to do that.

Here, I guess it is a matter of timing. They can't risk it with a winter flu season so we need to limp through another six months. Just outrageous, it really is.

So can we still go on public transport then or is it school/work only?

I’m assuming you can, but only if you deem it essential

We got told today that it’s now going to be mandatory to wear masks in work from Thursday, been met with mixed reactions. One colleague was all for it, saying it might stop customers without them coughing and spluttering everywhere, ironically she said this while she herself has not been wearing one. Others have moaned that they don’t or can’t wear them because it causes them to sweat or that they do nothing

I just dont understand what we're actually trying to achieve anymore. Not allowed anyone into your own home, no crowds at sport, not even allowed 5 a side now! Its getting a bit ridiculous and I just dont see any end to it all.

Hopefully Christmas isn't cancelled now too lol

From the gov.uk website
In the affected local areas, we advise that you should only use public transport for essential reasons. We encourage you to walk or cycle where possible and to plan your journey in advance, avoiding busy times and routes if possible. Examples of essential reasons include:

  • to get to and from work
  • to get essential food or medical supplies including click and collect services
  • to support someone who is vulnerable, if no-one else can do so
  • to travel to and from the homes of others in your support bubble
  • to attend an early years setting, school or college, or to accompany a child who is attending an early years setting, school or college, where necessary
  • to fulfil legal obligations
  • to seek medical care, or avoid illness, injury or harm
You can travel outside your area. However, you must not meet people you do not live with in their home or garden, whether inside or outside of the affected areas, unless they’re in your support bubble. You can still go on holiday outside of the affected areas, but you should only do this with people you live with (or have formed a support bubble with).

I got a train at 17.35 from Central today and it was about 10% full compared to what is was like when I used to go to work ( it was essential for me to use the train or I couldn’t have got to the pictures)

If the best minds had to resort to draconian measures, I'm keen to hear what less educated or experienced people would have considered as feasible.

We can talk about complacency and perhaps lack of preparations, but we're now six months in, with much more experience and we're still needing tight restrictions.

Evening Gents and Ladies.

From my local (NZL) perspective - it would make more sense for the UK to go through a period of hard lockdown to minimize the spread (say, four weeks).

It sucks, but it's proven to work - when we had our first outbreak in March (a few months before the start of our winter) it eventually led to a period of no cases in the country for three months. I think NZ at the time had the most restrictive measures put in place anywhere in the world. Likewise, Australia, in particular Victoria and New South Wales, have got their larger outbreaks under manageable control now after their lockdowns. Victoria has had less than 50 cases a day for a couple of weeks now. I'm not saying of course that the UK will get anywhere near that, but if new daily cases are reduced to say 20% of the current levels, then surely that would have to be a success. An efficient track & trace system set up by the government would help too.

Also a hard lockdown negates the confusion (and frustration) around the rules on what you can / can't do, where you can't / can visit. Again, it sucks, but it's short-term pain for a longer-term gain. Better a month of hard lock-down than potentially six months of level four.

I realize New Zealand has a lot of advantages over the UK that helps it manage COVID - geographic isolation, a sparse population relative to the size of the country outside of Auckland, and a populace which generally speaking is more trusting of it's government - however the measures implemented here have proven to work.

Anyways, I'm really sad to see the increase in cases in the UK and I sincerely hope it gets better sooner rather than later. Take care peeps and at least watching Everton at the moment warms the heart x.
