Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Bit of a daft argument, that - lockdowns are ruinously expensive and have considerable social impact especially on mental health and wellbeing. We should do everything we can to avoid them unless its absolutely necessary, and I doubt that anyone on either side of that "argument" doesn't acknowledge this.

The problem is that our government have been so incompetent that we are probably going to have to have another one, because the alternative is even more deaths than we saw in March and April and public disorder on a scale none of us have ever seen in this country.

What’s a daft argument ?

Slightly concerning news that will fuel those against vaccines. The two participants in the trial developed transverse myelitis- although the first case was related to MS. Still, it’s worrying and is a thorn in the “just hold on for the vaccine” line of thinking.

The condition is rare, but serious, and experts said that finding even one case among thousands of trial participants could be a red flag. Multiple confirmed cases, they said, could be enough to halt AstraZeneca’s vaccine bid entirely.

“If there are two cases, then this starts to look like a dangerous pattern,” said Mark Slifka, a vaccine expert at Oregon Health and Science University. “If a third case of neurological disease pops up in the vaccine group, then this vaccine may be done.”

It's surely only concerning news if the vaccine they're developing is released? In recent years, drugs have a 60-70% chance of making it to market once they get to phase 3 of clinical trials, which the Oxford/Astra vaccine is at. Historically, the rate was more around 50/50, which suggests that pharma companies are perhaps getting better at getting through the phases, but it's also perhaps sensible to believe that due to the fast nature of development that we may be looking at more historical ratios than current ratios. It's far from certain that the vaccine will make it to market, and that's the normal state of affairs.

Of course, there are almost 50 vaccines being developed, with only a handful of those in phase 3 trials. The chances of a drug making it to market from phase 2 drops to around 25%, so realistically you're probably looking at a handful of the nearly 50 vaccines being developed will make it to market. That's the normal state of affairs and shows that the trial process works. If we suddenly have 46 vaccines entering the market in March then you could perhaps justly say something fishy is afoot.

I was in the asda today wearing my mask

id say about half the people in there had them on

young attractive females are least likely to wear them ime

Surely its cheaper than what we've forked out on during lockdown!

I've done the test too, was randomly selected.

I came back negative, but it's not 100% accurate at an individual level. Was just to get a rough idea of the population as a whole.

It stressed in the booklet that even if I had had it, then the antibodies may have left my system, so wouldn't be able to be found anyway.

Obviously I'm not going around thinking I've had it anyway, like.

They're just going to get us through winter. It's crap, properly crap, but it's gonna be done.

I'm supposed to start a new job next month working for the NHS driving around delivering covid tests. The contract is until March - so guess that gives an idea of the timescale. It's part-time and I need to do it to get financially back on my feet after three months of no work and six months of no financial help.

But after this six months is up, after we're through the winter, there needs to be some way out of this. Globally, as well as on a national level. It's beyond the pale now.

Aye true mate

This T Cell thing then - could we use it to identify those most at risk and for those with T Cells for the virus give them like a passport that was muted in Germany to get them back out keeping the economy going?

We need to start thinking outside the box with this thing.

Ultimately once this is over I hope we realise we cant keep messing about with nature and start respecting animals/wildlife more before the next virus pops along.
