Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Restaurants and pubs have been coining it in over the summer. They can survive on their profits...certainly the major chains can. The major chains can also afford to contribute to furloughed worker's wages that they employ. Pubs and restaurants and salons and gyms that cant survive are struggling at any rate. These jobs are hanging by a thread at the best of times.

We cant afford for the psyche of the nation to go through another spring like we had. The economy will be there outside the hospitality sector.

Nope.

Pub and restaurant revenues in July were down 50% YoY.

Eat out to Help out assisted August figures but still not to a normal year. And that is after months of zero trading.

As for the bolded bit, to hell with all those people employed and their jobs eh ? 1.5 million of them in pubs and restaurants btw.

The article doesn't explain it, but if Dutch bars are anything like German ones then customers would've had to fill in their details upon entering and leaving the pub and there would've been a team of contact tracers following up.

Here's the article:

And the relevant quote:

That still to me doesn't make much sense. What if only after 11 someone came into the pub with covid and it spread, perhaps no one with covid was in the pub before 10? Lots of variables methinks unless you purposely test before they enter the pub and put the same amount of people with the disease both before and after they shut all the windows and doors etc. to see the difference in how it spreads.

A lockdown won't matter if folks won't follow masking/social distancing guidelines once it is lifted.

Very true but I think we have gone passed the trying to reduce it to nothing and we will be just trying to keep it in check so we don't get to the point where the figures are doubling/tripling per day.

The 10pm thing makes perfect sense to me.

When I was in Liverpool 2 weeks ago, I went for dinner and drinks on Saturday night in a restaurant in town (table service).

Walking back to get the last train from Central and town around Concert Square was ridiculous. Absolutely bouncing. No social distancing. Shisha pipes being shared. Kissing. Hugging. Dancing. Even Popworld (a nightclub) was open.

The 10pm closing down of restaurants/pubs/bars/clubs will put a stop on those big nights out, when people are least likely to be social distancing.

University’s advice is still for students to travel back and be ready for start of term.
They will be desperate to get some money back in.

Pubs have to adhere to social distancing and test and trace.

Your friends or family houses do not

It's not hard to grasp

Ok. So if it's so easy to grasp.

If I am in someone's house I can socially distance , wear a mask and santitise my hands regularly.

Outside pubs in town on a Saturday night will be full of drunk people who by that point will have no self awareness to socially distance with each other. You know because they are drunk, no way is a drunk person keeping 2 metres apart and not hugging everyone they meet down the street for example.

Yet by your logic, sanitised, socially distanced and mask wearing me is at more risk with a friend or family member than Mr and Mrs drunkards hugging and dancing and getting off with random people after being in the pub.

Does that make sense ?

Social distance, masks, hand washing. Plus a healthy dose of common sense, and we live with it? (Whilst protecting the vulnerable, obvs).
They are a given. But we cant ignore the fact that the hospitality sector has and will continue to be (if left unchecked) a massive problem in getting on top of the virus.

The'yll close for extended periods. I dont see how they cant be, because we WILL be heading into a terrible upsurge in hospitalisations.

I really don't know mate. My assumption was that via contact tracing they knew the main spreader was there overlapping both times. But if that wasn;t the case then I have no idea.

Spoke to a manager of a gym today (one of the big chains). They’ve had an email saying that gyms are not one of the places where the government is concerned about the spread. No need at this point to make plans on how to deal with a potential temporary closure.

How have you come to the conclusion that this is the only choice?

We can protect peoples live and protect the economy and people’s jobs.

Two month full lockdown will destroy more lives than it will save.

Who said anything about the economy per se?

I'm talking about hospitality. It is an incubator for the virus.
