Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Well the seasonal flu won't cost thousands of lives because we have a vaccine that is proven to prevent deaths. So that's far from the truth , and in a society that is encouraged to have protective measures in place, it won't just be covid-19 that will be limited in transmission this winter. Less people will get sick from the flu whilst we actively prevent people from getting sick from covid-19.

Don't kid yourself that this is the greatest health threat for a generation. 78000 die every year from smoking. That's a generational worry , obesity is another.

Got to look at things in perspective one day mate, probably won't be for a while for many but eventually perspective has to kick in. Otherwise we will be living in fear for years , even when the numbers still don't reflect the fear.
We're coming up for a million dead from Covid in 9 months. Please dont say perspective is needed.

Pick a cause.
Be needles in a haystack mate. No way of ever knowing what has dropped other than complete guesswork.

Still 1000 less a week at a time we are using preventable measures which is no coincidence.

What I'm saying is that if the cases Vs deaths doesn't grow the same way as it did in the beginning then the risk has decreased as a result.

But then using your logic , if we banned smoking tomorrow then generations would benefit from 78000 a year less deaths. If we made everyone eat healthy then the knock on effect there would save thousands of lives.

Yet we dont? We give people the choice to do that and then never really talk about it.

All I'm saying is that when your average deaths are dropping whilst you have preventable measures in place , when your positive Vs hospital cases don't match up anymore then a good run of that means things aren't as bad as they once were.

The virus isn't going away any time soon but at some point you have to draw the line and accept those low numbers as normality much like other things that kill people.

Like I said. You dont get it.

Hopefully, the deaths will remain low, but the only way to ensure that is to prevent, as best we can, an uncontrolled surge in infections. Hence, local lock downs when needed.

Lob in the need to allow the NHS space to cope with those that might need it, and its all about slowing a spread.

Using smoking or cancer deaths as some sort of metric to support your opinion is utterly deluded.

We cancelled our holiday to Lanzarote and instead had a nights stay Betws -y -coed (forgive my spelling) but it was awful...we were both utterly para and the hotel was equally para and it sucked the joy out of it all...in part we were glad to help out the tourist industry but also a bit bummed..........we both are now reassuring each other we have no covid but have raw hands and mask rash.

Not the most glamorous place to holiday even under normal circumstances.

We once stayed there and the owner of the hotel we were in, was all ready to lock us out for the night after nearly breaking the hotels self imposed 11pm curfew !

Keys in a bowl?

On a serious note, what type of restrictions are we expecting across the Merseyside region?

Smoking creates trillions in taxes and creates millions of jobs tho.

And it only kills the people who choose to smoke.

Oh so because they pay taxes they are allowed to kill people?

Or to put it in Dave's tone of words, it's fine to pay trillions to murder 8 million people around the world?

Why is it deluded?

We aren't talking about covid cases, we are talking about covid deaths.

So something that is proven to kill people , to the extent of the biggest PREVENTABLE killer around the world but it has no context here?

That with 20 deaths a day for covid pales in comparison to smoking related deaths , that noone really cares about because they pay their taxes apparantly.

Yet wearing masks, social distancing all the rest of it is all designed to prevent people dying right? So why is it do deluded that these same people who are wearing masks, socially distancing so they don't die of covid are just killing themselves with smoking instead.

So when hundreds a week are dying from smoking and tens are dying from covid 19, you really think they are so far apart in importance? That banning smoking alone would save millions upon millions of lives In this country over the next few generations?

Otherwise what is the point in having protective measures. It's deluded to dismiss smoking as an example as something that is killing yet champion not dying from another cause. And to not care about it.

We are saving thousands from covid but happily condemning millions with smoking. That's your perspective , generations instead of numbers.

Yes, smoking provides revenue and jobs.

And it doesn't directly cause any deaths.

Wait?

It doesn't directly cause deaths? You are literally inhaling carcogens every single day. On top of the other hundreds of other poisons in it .

It absolutely directly causes death. And death in non smokers via second hand smoke, which I would guess biggest age group affected by that is children.

So it's fine that tobacco companies can murder millions a year because they pay taxes?

Is that really the price someone's life is now? The going rate of tax ?

Show me a single death certificate that has smoking as a cause of death.

If your gonna whataboutery, then so am I.

The tobacco industry creates revenue and jobs and nobody has ever died from smoking.

Really? lol

Fair enough. You are circumnavigating the issue here so no point in continuing.

The cancers , diseases etc just magically appear in people who smoke.

Got ya.
