True enough, the USA's view of 'Public Health' is an individual member of the public pays for his own.
Not collective ' Public Health'
The system looks after individuals. They have say enough ventilators that their experience tells them their individual members will require at any given time. They have no mandate, like 'Collective Public Health' to carry spare capacity to cover increases in demand.
Our health secretary goes on telly today asking the producers of ventilators to make more.. and quickly.
Couldn't make it up.

But if people were civil and not so selfish and didnt stockpile then you wouldnt have to predict the stockpiling because nobody would be doing it. Thats the point
Firstly, I've stated that there are two reasons to stockpile; one is to make sure you get supplies before others get them all, and the other is so that you can self-isolate and not have to continuously go shopping and risk getting the virus.

Secondly, it's extremely naive to think that everyone will unilaterally decide to behave in the best interest of society - it's just not going to happen. It's extremely difficult to predict what people are going to do at the best of times, nevermind in a pandemic. Do you really want to risk being one of the few altruistic nice people who are not stockpiling, and end up with nothing because everybody else acted in their own interests?

Controversial but @Bruce Wayne has faith in our Chief Medical Officer to round up the human race in a herd to enable the virus to wipe us out so the oldies can carry the human torch of life onwards for at least 3-4 years.

We have to think it's at least worth a try with the snails. Just make sure we get the elderly snails away first.

Our planet is basically going to have to be like a reverse logan's run to survive. If you have even a slight appearance of youth and a relatively clean medical record then you need to be herded into the Corona machine immediately for the good of the nation.

If we get very lucky the virus might just stop killing people just long enough for all the Oldies to roam free like the film Cocoon until they are snuffed out by age and incontinence 3 months later.
Reports that Queensland could...maybe order sorry advise, old people not to go out at all - no mention of shoot on sight yet.
Supermarkets to have dedicated oldies hour for shopping 7 am to 8. aka, get them in and out before proper people want to come in.
Takes me all my time to get up and dressed for 10.00

The only people who believe that are the ones who have the utmost assuredness that the government will help them. Which in the vast majority of cases they will.

Not because of the leadership but because public servants are pretty awesome and dedicated at what they do.

Instead of the kids asking if someone older can get booze/cigs for them the pensioners will make a killing off toilet paper.

This was a long time ago. He has long passed. He had a good life and thankfully never hurt himself or anyone else. Saw your sad response about my grandfather. We kind of laugh about it now. Anytime he was left alone, he'd find the keys and go drive around. Visit his childhood neighborhood in the city, restaurants, just stop by our house and then get the keys taken.

I think he'd stop by after his joyride just to thumb his nose at my family. Just to show, "I still got this". Now I'm sad, makes me miss him.

Just saying, those old folks get stubborn. It's like telling a kid, don't do this, and they rush to flout what you're trying to protect them from lol. Idk kind of funny and beautiful in an odd way, the resiliency.

Anyways just went to 10 from 2 in the last 7 hours here. They're ordering restaurants closed I'm pretty sure tomorrow.

Today we received word that two of our ACEP members are in critical condition as a result of COVID-19. An emergency physician in his 40s in the state of Washington presented with symptoms consistent with the COVID-19 syndrome. A 70-year-old member in New Jersey has tested positive for the virus. I am deeply saddened by this news, but not surprised. As emergency physicians, we know the risks of our calling. We stand united with our colleagues and our thoughts and prayers for a full and speedy recovery are with each of them and their families.

In Washington, whether this was a case of occupational transmission or community-based spread of the disease is unknown. The hospital was acutely aware of the COVID-19 risk to health care workers and has worked closely with the CDC to ensure the appropriate policies and procedures are in place to mitigate risk. This emergency physician complied at all times with appropriate PPE procedures.

In Patterson, NJ, the physician, who leads his institution’s emergency preparedness, was admitted to the hospital several days ago with upper respiratory problems and remains in isolation in its intensive care unit.

It is my hope that these colleagues and their cases serve as a reminder to each of us to stay vigilant. This virus is dangerous, and its impact is still unfolding. As emergency physicians, we answer the call to care for our most vulnerable, even at great personal risk. Knowing that, I urge each of you to meticulously follow the recommended precautions to protect yourself.
