Hospital figures - 10 deaths were announced today, 3 down on yesterday but 4 up on last Saturday. 8 were in English hospitals, again 3 down on yesterday and 2 up on last week with all occurring in the past 10 days. The 7 day rolling average rises to 9.29

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 12 deaths were announced today, 2 up on yesterday and the exact same total as last Saturday. The 7 day rolling average remains the same at 7.29

For the 60 day cut off, 21 deaths were announced today, 10 up on yesterday and 9 down on last Saturday. The 7 day rolling average falls to 11.29

Well, the tests that they are carrying out don't. They test for A Corona virus. Not THE Corona virus. People catch Corona viruses all the time and don't even know it. They can't separate covid19 from other Corona viruses in testing can they yet?
We're being told here that they can identify which strain of Covid - genomic is the term they use - was identified in any particular location. This is useful in tracing, apparently.

To your point, is influenza a Corona virus?

Interesting little note this.

Speaking to my mum and she now knows a few people now who have the virus over In the Wirral. The connection between them is pubs oddly enough.

Kin 'ell mate, they're testing for the footprint of RNA specific to COVID-19, which is genetically miles away from other COVID footprints.

I don't know where you're getting your info from, but, whereever it is, it's bollocks. What you're suggesting is that a size 5, 4 inch heel Jimmy Choo looks the same to the naked eye as a size ten Asics Gel running shoe.

The infection trend is a red herring. More tests more cases. % of tests infected tend would be a decent measure, but meanwhile check the numbers hospitalised and number of deaths for the real picture......

It's too early to say for sure, and would likely take another week or so to confirm, but there are indications that hospital admissions are just beginning to tick up slightly. They're still very low though, especially when you look at the rise in the the number of cases.

Also, although testing has increased, the percentage of positive tests may just be ticking up. Overall, at the moment, because the average age of those infected is relatively low, it's not a major concern, but there are concerns about the possibility of infections of the under 40's transferring to the over 60's.

Common sense says that if under 40's working in health and social care are increasingly likely to be infected, then some of those infections will end up being transmitted to those at risk. Eventually, that will likely lead to deaths in the vulnerable, but, and although this sounds callous, if those deaths are lost in the noise of 600 to 650k deaths a year, then, statistically, though not individually, those deaths will be considered acceptable.

Family emergency meant I spent from Thursday to this morning at NI’s main Covid hospital. Craigavon Hospital currently has 2
outbreaks and approx 50 medical staff in isolation.

The place is on high alert as you can imagine and it was eerie with all the empty corridors (people are afraid to attend A&E and no visitors).

I was allowed into the theatre briefly and then into Recovery and trust me it is a sobering experience with everyone around masked up, visored and wearing the extra coverings over their normal gear. I have always taken the risk of Covid seriously but having had a tiny glimpse of the actual front line it has made it all the more real for me.

Huge respect for all the staff working in those conditions day in and day out.
