When and how did I earn this hotly contested honour?

I should point out that nobody is safe even when I stay at home as there are to guys working full time on replacing the bathroom whilst a small army are working on the outside of the building.

I believe there`s room in Daves bunker if you`re feeling a bit anxious ?

The only catch is that you have to sing the Internationale on the hour and every hour.

What I don't understand is how much they changed the narrative around stadiums and masks.

I mean, why didn't WHO and our leading medical experts make such a massive u-turn on what you'd think are pretty basic stuff? Like whether masks are effective?

Like so;

I remember this woman swearing blind that large crowds aren't as bad as smaller environments like pubs. She was also totally against masks.

Yet pubs opened a lot earlier than stadiums/arenas but here she is, again with her wisdom...

I'd listen to her over the political editor at the rag tbh.

They have been dancing on a pin is my view.

Early days, it was all about coping; protect the NHS, stay at home, clap clap clap on Thurdays, etc.

Now, its control and stamp on it.

The macro issues have been obvious, but the myriad of micro issues will continue to pop up, cos basically, we have never had to do this before.

On masks early doors, there wasnt much point, and anyrate, imagine the chaos if everyone had to get one, when the NHS and social carers couldnt get enough? Macro, NHS, micro, dont be a div.

In a nutshell, the micro stuff they kinda make up as we go along.

I listened to her at the start of the year when she sat with Boris Johnson and told me masks are bad - arenas/large events aren't an issue and pose significantly less risk than smaller environments;

2m35s - was this ignorance, or is that just what narrative suited them at the time?

That's the bit that gets me mate.

They either don't know basics like the impact on crowd size/masks or there's a narrative.

It's the outdoor v indoor risk that I don't understand.

It's a proven fact that the virus is much less of a risk outside. Yet I can't go and watch a football match, but I could sit in a bar all day and get drunk if I wanted.

I'm not saying I want to close bars and restaurants, because I definitely don't, even though I barely drink and it doesn't interest me. But it's completely contradictory policy making and that is unsustainable going forward. You can't keep telling people something is true and expect them to agree with restrictions that fly in the face of logic. It's all quite short term, and we need a longer term plan.

I think we are at the stage where restrictions need to be lifted and people allowed to make personal decisions based on their own personal circumstances. Far too many restrictions do not have logic. Like here in NI, only 15 people can meet outdoors, yet you could book a table for twice that many and have a meal. It doesn't make sense anymore.

Think its a bit of both.

Like I said, priorities shift as the narrative shifts. As it was, the NHS was at breaking point, as it is, the need to get the economy going while minimising infections is in play. Might shift back, who knows? But if we keep this mask/SD/dont be a bell behaviour for a few months, the new year might be a brighter one than it looked.

This is a relatively new virus so there has been an inevitable evolution in our understanding. My impression was that they, and the WHO and others, were judging masks based upon doubts about their effectiveness with other viruses, and the global shortage of clinical-grade masks at that time that would not be helped by Joe Public trying to buy a load.

Regarding indoor vs outdoor, again, as Tim says above, to these lay ears, it makes sense that we'd be more contagious indoors than outdoors, but I strongly suspect at the moment that things are being driven by commercial factors as much as they are health factors, hence why restaurants and pubs are open. That live theatre performances haven't been for much of that time probably says more about the voter demographics involved than any health matters associated with it.

So you subscribe to the narrative/they intentionally led people up the garden path then.

Billions spent every year and they couldn't decide (or publicly admit) whether masks were effective in a pandemic or whether pubs were any worse or better than an indoor arena.

[Edit] It also wasnt indoor vs outdoor, it was small crowds (pubs) vs large crowds (indoor arenas).

Agree mate.

It is what it is, measures at different points etc and I always anticipated masks would come in mainly as a visual stimulus.

You either believe 'they' genuinely didn't have a clue with an approach on masks/crowded places or they intentionally give a bum steer - or a combination of both.

Pre lock down/lock down, it was pretty clear. We can argue the toss if it should have been a few days earlier, but the message was crystal.

Post lock down, its a suck it and see I reckon. Hence the random quarantine advice, the lessons from else where, and some weird contradictions. On balance, it seems to be working, but not putting any bunting out any time soon.
