Is this Covid related though?

Plenty of young people sadly die every day of many other things - I personally know of 2 people from my old school who died under 25 - one of an undiagnosed heart condition and the other septicaemia.

The university is claiming that it was a policy they were going to put in place a long time ago, but they just happened to release it about 2 weeks before school was to start. So who knows...very poor timing I would say. Boston University did have a problem with student deaths (unrelated to covid).

We do know that freezing weather will not kill off the virus. It proliferated in the middle of a central Chinese winter.
There’s also only tangential evidence that low temperatures aid the spread, based on a time before we had a better understanding of the disease. I just find it a bit problematic to jump to the conclusion the virus will spread just because it’s getting colder. By using that logic we’d be having a SARS outbreak because it’s warm.

I don think it’s the cold as such, but people being more inclined to congregate indoors when the temperatures drop

I think you’d have to consider that . Look at bars and restaurants the busiest area in the city centre are castle st and bold street that are pushing the pavement /cafè culture idea . Once the cold weather starts if those people still want to socialise They’re going to be inside and all evidence we’ve seen so far seems to suggests being inside presents a higher risk .

Yeah that worries me here too a bit. I guess loads of bars could invest in those big outdoor heaters for the colder months

Given that this government have blatantly lied about so many issues (not just about the virus) why should I believe that they have had no "input" into manipulating the death stats? Why are you so sure "many other countries are though?"
If they were going to lie about the number of covid deaths then they would have done a better job of it and we wouldn't be second worse as regards deaths per capita.

There isn't a country in the world that is as strict as England in that it incudes every single person that tested positive for the virus, irrespective of when that test was taken and when the individual dies. Not even the other home nations do that but I don't see you questioning their figures.

All people who die in hospitals and care homes are now tested for the virus to make sure they are not missed.

Before we started testing in care homes, all GPs were instructed to include covid on the death certificates where the deceased showed symptoms. This is still the case for deaths in the community.

Whilst the Tory politicians may be prepared to lie about death numbers, they wouldn't be able to do so without civil service and medical staff being complicit. Are you suggesting they are?

I have given explanations for the 20% excess deaths during the period that haven't been already taken up with covid. As I said, many of them probably will be covid, but had been before the step up in testing and had been missed by GPs as patients were asymptomatic. The government will have no way of knowing about these.

As regards other countries, do you believe the death figures coming out of China and Russia.? Also countries like South Africa, Brazil, India, Pakistan, Mexico, Iran, Colombia, Peru, Bangladesh and many others where it has frequently been reported that their hospitals are totally overrun and can't cope, and have huge infection numbers, but small death figures by comparison. In some cases tiny. Do you really believe they are recording everything the way we are?

It would be interesting to hear what all these blatant lies are too. Don't hold back. Really go for it

I've consistently criticised this government for their lack of leadership, decision making and, in particular, communicating which has been horrendous at times. But I don't recall seeing many blatant lies so it will be interesting to see what I missed.

Just pointing out that it was a cold place where the virus took hold..
No conclusion.

Thought that it has been demonstrated that it thrives around 4 Deg C?

Anywayz, we don't get much freezing in these parts nowadays, so dream on on that score. I think the main reasons for winter being bad, as stated above a few times, is close proximity, lack of fresh air, lack of sun and vit D.

Apparently where I live this week around 40% of the new recorded infections have come from returning holidaymakers

Not too surprising really.

When most people are on holiday, you're out every day and night, mixing with people you wouldn't normally mix with, so your number of social interactions increases, meaning you're more likely to be in contact with someone infected. I'd guess you'd have less contact this year than normally, but even so, there's a degree of inevitability about it.

Then come home and pass it on to friends, family, colleagues and totally random contacts. At that point you hope test, trace and isolate does it's job.
