Think we can discount France going into lock down earlier as a cause of the second wave as multiple 14 day period have come and gone since they locked down. More likely the opening up which has coincided with us wanting our holidays abroad. If I were french would not want diseased Brits swarming over, it's horrible enough being one currently!
Not only the careless Brits, we have many very careless Germans and Dutch roaming around and crowding the holiday regions too.
Oh and the Belgians don't seem to be too accommodating re masks and distancing either.
Well, they're all on holiday n'est pas.

Seems like everyone is in summer mode and no longer cares. Definitely the case in Germany. Autumn will be interesting.

All settings - There’s two figures to report as a technical error meant yesterday’s figure wasn’t published. That figure for yesterday was 103, up 82 on Monday with it being a data catch up day and up 14 on last Tuesday which meant the 7 day rolling average rose to an even 57

Today’s figure is 77, down 26 on yesterday but up 17 on last Wednesday which means the average rises to 58.71

Today’s earlier hospital figure sees that average fall to an even 11

If you think about it, and I know very few people do, the 28 day rule that Scotland, Wales and NI apply, although it seems a bit arbitrary, is pretty sensible. It will occassionally include someone knocked over by a bus, but it'll also occassionally exclude someone discharged from hospital who died of a heart attack brought on by COVID complications. Overall, they'll probably balance out.

@Kenshin - it appears common sense will now be applied pretty much as discussed/expected ...

Personally, I think that means the revisited DoH figures will now be a small underestimate, but it makes sense to measure the deaths consistently across the UK.

The ONS figures, though not so prominent in the media, will be the ones which will be regarded as the most accurate, and because there are standardised ways of recording deaths on death certificates across Europe, they'll also be the figures best suited to comparisons across the EC

Bit hesitant to post this, but it is interesting information and the type that would hopefully increase the chance of governments/healthcare systems investing in health lifestyle programs and initiatives.

I will lead with... discussion welcomed. Shaming, blaming, derogatory comments and similar are not.

Also lets not argue about BMI. We all know it has many short comings, but honestly in the US, the chances of a very high BMI (>40) being a lean muscle bound person are quite small.

Overall take home point, very overweight males between ages 40-60 years - y'all better be wearing a mask and washing your hands.

I`ve read that collectively the hospitality industry employs one in nine people across the board in the UK.

If you combine the job losses there with the job losses in the service industry, then it`s hardly surprising that we`ve gone into recession.

Hospitality's about 4% of GDP and tourism's about 10% of GDP and both were pretty much wiped out from April to June. I'd imagine there's a fair bit of overlap between the two, but you don't have to be great with numbers to see how easy it is to get to 20% PDQ.

The real killer is that tourism ain't likely to come back to anything like normal for some time.

Will be interesting to see what happens with tourism, as there will be somewhat of a rebalancing with the vast majority of brits spending all of their leisure time at home for the foreseeable future.
