I think you're probably right. But unfortunately there's no way of ever knowing, or being able to prove we'd be far better off if we locked down earlier. France locked down earlier and is having a surge in cases right now. Australia is also having a bit of surge in cases too. I'm not sure it's as simple as saying everything would be fine if we locked down quicker.

Airports is the one I still do not understand. Why did we not test people coming in from hotspots, or stop arrivals?

Think we can discount France going into lock down earlier as a cause of the second wave as multiple 14 day period have come and gone since they locked down. More likely the opening up which has coincided with us wanting our holidays abroad. If I were french would not want diseased Brits swarming over, it's horrible enough being one currently!

I'm discounting anything because I don't know the reasons.

Not sure there's any evidence it's definitely the fault of British holidaymakers either though?

We are absolutely nailing being at the top of death per capita despite Government promises and assurances of a ring of steel round our most vulnerable. Rejoice Conservatism at its purest form, lying!

Incidentally, I was reading some research this morning highlighting the lack of diversity in clinical trials in the US, despite the clear evidence that minority groups are most affected by the virus. Hopefully that's not the case with the trials being done here.
Significant distrust given some appalling history and the current day disparities in medical care
The panel found that the men had agreed freely to be examined and treated. However, there was no evidence that researchers had informed them of the study or its real purpose. In fact, the men had been misled and had not been given all the facts required to provide informed consent.

The men were never given adequate treatment for their disease. Even when penicillin became the drug of choice for syphilis in 1947, researchers did not offer it to the subjects. The advisory panel found nothing to show that subjects were ever given the choice of quitting the study, even when this new, highly effective treatment became widely used.

Why are people shocked at the recession figures. We still haven't opened up large sections of the economy 5 months on. The figures were always going to be horrific.

You can't support continued lockdown restrictions and also be aghast at a deep recession.
As much as I think the UK government have been largely woeful throughout and pretty corrupt in their contract distribution, I also don't think economic figures can currently be used as a stick to beat anyone with right now. Very much a it is what is situation, at least in the short term.
