I have to get the train to the office twice a week. The train is probably a bit worse because you have people close to you some of whom don't wear masks or don't wear them properly. It's crap being at the office to though TBH.
Face coverings are mandatory on all public transport in Ireland and while I find that reassuring I won’t be on a train for a while yet.

I take your point Brennen, thank you, but it was a question, (albeit vexatious) rather than a statement.
It was also aimed at those who do not wear masks, who I think act selfishly and stupidly.
But you are correct, I could have phrased it better.
However, I would say it is a mark of stupidity to follow the government which issues contradictory instructions and then fails to follow them.
Remember ¨Weapons of mass destruction ¨ ?

Is anyone else feeling a bit confused by the Government lately?

Making the wearing of masks mandatory in shops - good, should be extended to every public space apart from bars and restaurants IMO where social distancing measures can be adhered to from my experience over the past couple of weeks.

Everyone should go back to the office - uh, wtf?

To what extent are wearing masks down to controlling the virus and not just paying lip service?

Let me put this to you, food for thought.

When the UK went into lockdown , you didn't need a mask on the bus. You didn't need one in shops, work , hospital generally etc. Despite the sheer numbers being reported and the amount of deaths happening, you didn't need a mask.

Now the numbers have dropped significantly , mass gatherings aplenty has not seen any increase in numbers (or hospital visits) and people are being encouraged to go back to normality, masks are suddenly mandatory?

Do we really need to wear masks? Or are we getting told to now simply because the government are pretending to implement measures to appease people?

Think about it. I'm not peddling a conspiracy theory about masks (I'll save that for the Americans), I'm just simply asking why now? After the pandemic gas had its worst hits?

Because prevention was applicable 3 months ago, and people have stopped getting sick anywhere near as much.

But on the right side of course. Overquoting figures in this case is surely better than under quoting?
I wouldn't say either is better mate. A perfect tally is what one ought to aim for, with transparent methods that can be used for other stat's/modelling. Obviously, it will never be perfect, and whether it's higher or lower doesn't really matter imo, it's how small we can get the margin of error that's important.

In this scenario would a false positive not be preferable to a false negative?

ie identifying covid as a contributory factor when it isn’t rather than not identifying it as a contributory factor when it was. In terms of identifying and researching the potential effects.

Well yes, the wearing of masks should have been made mandatory before the fox had entered the hen house. Absolutely. However, the fox is still in the hen house so we better do what we can to keep the losses to a minimum.

Hospital figures - 13 is the announced figure, 5 down on yesterday and 26 down on last Saturday. All 13 were in English hospitals, 3 down on yesterday and 25 down on last week with all happening in the past 10 days

Number of coronavirus deaths and cases
Deaths

On 17 July, the Secretary of State asked Public Health England (PHE) to urgently review their estimation of daily death statistics. Currently the daily deaths measure counts all people who have tested positive for coronavirus and since died, with no cut-off between time of testing and date of death. There have been claims that the lack of cut-off may distort the current daily deaths number. We’re therefore pausing the publication of the daily figure while this is resolved.

Bunch of fooking charlatans.

No daily updates on tv, now no updates at all.

It's because the death rate here from Covid19 is almost 100 per day...in the 'low risk' period. We're the sick man of Europe. A continuing cesspit.

They want to hide it away because the return to business they hoped for has cratered.
