Prof Jonathan Heeney, a virologist at the University of Cambridge, said the study confirmed a growing body of evidence that immunity to Covid-19 is short-lived. “Most importantly, it puts another nail in the coffin of the dangerous concept of herd immunity,” he said.
“I cannot underscore how important it is that the public understands that getting infected by this virus is not a good thing. Some of the public, especially the youth, have become somewhat cavalier about getting infected, thinking that they would contribute to herd immunity. Not only will they place themselves at risk, and others, by getting infected, and losing immunity, they may even put themselves at greater risk of more severe lung disease if they get infected again in the years to come.”
I do hate how these guys sometimes offer no actual solutions and just deliver bad news. If immunity doesn’t last and potential vaccines may not actually be that effective as the article postulates then the solution is what exactly?
The Spanish flu epidemic was in circulation for 3 years I believe.
I'd like to think that 100 years later, and with the advancement of modern science, there is enough progress to reduce the duration off the 2019/2020 version by half that time.
From the summation of the various reports and articles, that seems to be roughly where we are too - there is a more than good possibility of a vaccine (or more than one) by the end of this year and then with scale-up in production, another six months before it becomes widely available.
I wouldn't have an issue personally with getting vaccinated twice yearly, it would be the logistical pressure globally to make that happen which would be more concerning.
And agreed that scientists should do more than pose warnings. Warnings are necessary, but when done in isolation they cause more stress and alarm amongst the public at large.
We shall. All 25-27 so not really worried if we get it even though most likely 80% already at it at one point or another. We all went to Mardi Gras so all good

You would hope people would read and comprehend the speech before following the herd.
She's basically saying that society thrives when we ourselves look to do our best for us, our families, our neighbours, and our community, rather than relying on the government to do it all on our behalf. The only place in that speech that she advocates "dog-eat-dog" is when the left willfully misinterpret it.
