It's a measure they have identified to at least stop you unknowingly spread bacteria from your mouth. It's akin to doctors and nurses wearing them in hospitals and in surgical areas.

I personally think it would be great if more Westerners adopted the Japanese habit of wearing masks when they felt they were coming down with a cold/flu.

But up until recently you couldn’t get a lot of men to even wash their hands after using the toilet so absent a raging pandemic I think their regular use is unlikely.

I can't remember whether it was the UK or Germany, but I think one of them was talking about making it compulsory to wear them on public transport during flu season every year, even after this Covid thing is over.

Was a short article on BBC earlier that said the UK daily death count, (christ, how morbid have we become) is below the normal 5 year average for the first time since March.

I get the theory behind it I'm just wondering why it's never been applied across the board before as it is in Japan etc for flus and the rest if it's that obviously a health aid. Just what annoys me is seeing obese people filling their trolleys with appaling cheap meats while being all bolshy about wearing masks. I suppose its cos theres not enough masks to go around as to why it's not imposed here.

So in summary overweight people shouldn't wear masks because they will die anyway from eating "cheap meat". So what's the point?

Are you really suggesting they ignore what's been instructed because to you their life is less valuable somehow.
