But in Merica, if someone in hospital dies of Covid, (or anything come to that), do the hospitals go after the surviving family for their bill?

gf died 14 years ago, we never never got married because of health care bills, so anyway long story short the $175K bill that arrived on my doorstep (after medicare paid their share) after she died would have been my responsibility if we were married.
