... then some level of death will have to be accepted to return the world to some form of normality. What that level is will be up for debate.
It's an uncomfortable thing to discuss, but if we get to a point where more people are likely to die of non-COVID causes than those being saved by whatever form of lockdown we're in, then we need to look at the situation.
Ideally, we'd find a way of having zero COVID deaths which doesn't have a knock on effects on other health aspects, but, without a vaccine or therapeutics, that seems unlikely, and even they would be unlikely to save everyone.
The other, statto way of looking at it is, would we accept a small number of COVID deaths if the overall death rate was below average levels ? Intellectually, that outcome makes sense, but emotionally, it seems wrong. But, as a nation, we tacitly accept ( mostly through lack of knowledge of the situation ) the fact that over 100,000 people a year die through preventable causes.
The difference with COVID, is that it's a new risk, and we process risks which we've grown up with in a totally different way to new risks.
