... then some level of death will have to be accepted to return the world to some form of normality. What that level is will be up for debate.

It's an uncomfortable thing to discuss, but if we get to a point where more people are likely to die of non-COVID causes than those being saved by whatever form of lockdown we're in, then we need to look at the situation.

Ideally, we'd find a way of having zero COVID deaths which doesn't have a knock on effects on other health aspects, but, without a vaccine or therapeutics, that seems unlikely, and even they would be unlikely to save everyone.

The other, statto way of looking at it is, would we accept a small number of COVID deaths if the overall death rate was below average levels ? Intellectually, that outcome makes sense, but emotionally, it seems wrong. But, as a nation, we tacitly accept ( mostly through lack of knowledge of the situation ) the fact that over 100,000 people a year die through preventable causes.

The difference with COVID, is that it's a new risk, and we process risks which we've grown up with in a totally different way to new risks.

People are committing suicide due to this you know.

You've spent two hours moaning on the internet that because you can't go to the gym the whole premise of lockdown should be abandoned with a series of increasingly outlandish statements.

I'm not seeing a connection between the two.

I`m guessing that he`s done research and made his decision based on the stats and the numbers that he`s crunched.

Which is a sensible thing to do.

... and is a genius with stats and numbers

Trust me, he's not.

I can understand him not being comfortable with going away for the weekend with people he wouldn't otherwise see, but not leaving the house and not allowing his child to go to school in September means he's not being rational about the situation.

Thousands of people die each year as a result of accidents at home* and millions have to go to A&E for the same reason. Home feels far safer than it actually is. We all do stupid things at home that we'd never dream of doing in a Health & Safety conscious work environment.

*admittedly, most of these are probably falls involving the elderly, but lets not spoil the argument with the truth

We are all essentially locked up at home waiting to die at the moment.

I mean this is the ironic part of busing out of lockdown.

Depends on the refurbishments. Getting materials to complete has been the hard part. A delay doesn’t really affect us and I think it will be slow take up to begin with anyway. A 2 metre rule just won’t work so I assume they will change to 1 metre by the end of June. We are still aiming for 4/7 but we’ll see how it pans out.....
Can't see them going to 1 metre to be honest as 1 metre is basically the normal distance pre Virus.
I think they will go for 1.5 metre but who knows certainly not the government.
Best of luck with the reopening it's just more costs added to what is already a very tough game to make any money in.

Lifting weights in a gym setting means a helluva lot to some people

Serious question why is it ok to mock people for this?

Someone could be severely struggling with their mental health and find going the gym to be something that helps them greatly. Not only is it a place for exercise but it could also be a place where many people get most of their interactions with other humans. The gym is therapy for some people and has helped aid depression in myself as an example.

I do find it weird how the push to get pubs reopened is so incredibly huge but people wanting to return to the gym is seen as bizarre and unnecessary. It says a lot about our culture.
