Hmm

They're not seeing any excess deaths ( unsurprising really, given they've had a few hundred COVID related deaths ), so that's probably broadly true over there.

Broadly speaking ( though grossly simplified ) :-

No excess deaths - means the people dying with COVID may well have died anyway
Obvious excess deaths - means most people dying with COVID died prematurely

Very moving and beautifully written article

When this all finishes there will be doctors and nurses leaving the profession left right and centre, no amount of money is enough too make up for the hell these people are going through and what do we do we go outside and bang a few pans on a Thursday night to make them feel better.
We have let them down this should never be alowed to happen again.

When someone who's infected, breaths out or talks, the virus disperses much quicker outside because of air movement. If you're inside, it's got nowhere else to go so hangs around longer. Opening all doors and windows would help, but being outside is better.

Also, if one of the people living in the house is infected, then the surfaces will be contaminated, and there are more surfaces inside than out.

But, yea, herd immunity is the driver here ffs.

To be fair, they seem happy enough to see plenty of new cases, so long as the number per day / week is dropping, which'll build up a small amount of extra immunity, and that'll likely be in their thoughts, but it won't be the main driver for this change.

The governments ring fence was not to protect those in care homes, but became death traps. Absolutely inhumane from this government, as those elderly that cried out for help, were denied treatment in a proper facility with trained staff and/or refused to understand what was needed and act accordingly..

Government rejected radical lockdown of England's care homes

"Public health officials proposed a radical lockdown of care homes last month to stem surging coronavirus deaths, including staff moving in for four weeks and deploying NHS Nightingale hospitals – but it was rejected by the government, the Guardian has learned.

An 11-point plan proposing “a further lockdown of care homes” was submitted to Downing Street on 28 April by officials at Public Health England (PHE), as fatalities peaked in care homes and the virus spread to half of homes in the worst-affected areas.

They urged ministers to “use NHS facilities and other temporary accommodation to quarantine and isolate residents”, and to “consider whether staff can move into the care home for the next four weeks”.

But neither of the proposals, recommended as “high impact”, were included in a subsequent action plan on infection control announced by the health secretary, Matt Hancock, last week".

Just saw clips of the press conference earlier. What the flip was that all about with the journalists asking blatantly political questions to Whitty and Vallance. It's not question time, they are medical experts not politicians.

Ask Johnson those questions and keep asking him those questions over and over again. But I thought the whole thing was a total farce.

They are civil servants. They serve regardless of who the government is.

Ask the PM why his advisor hasn't been replaced. Keep asking the PM. Over and over again if they want.

Trying to get a quote out of the medical and science officers for clicks is just downright rubbish journalism imo.

Actually I thought it was quite good. There were a lot of serious messages given out by the government, two decent questions from the public then the lady from the BBC was put right back in her box when Boris refused to go over irrelevant questions just to please political agitators. He nailed the Political bit, allowed to Scientists to state categorically that they are not interested or taking part in politics. I thought it was a good daily update and I’m looking forward to going around to my mates garden for drinks sometime next week.....

Yep ventilation seems huge with this thing.

I only watched the short clip of 3 journalists in a row trying to get quotes out of Whitty and Vallance.

I've stopped watching them and just read bits and pieces if what's happened. But from what I have seen the questions from the public are far better than the journalists. And the governments handling of the questions has been dreadful as well.

We need more public questions and fewer journalists. People get their own news these days. We dont need others to tell us what we should think.

I remember last year sitting in the pub with one of the lads. He had his back to the window and the sun was behind him as it was going down. I was facing him on the other side of the table. As he spoke, you could actually see the air movement and the ‘droplets’ of moisture being projected. I immediately moved my pint. Throughout this epidemic, and before, I have thought of that evening and bear it in mind if ever talking to anyone and will no doubt be reminded of it again when the pubs open. The debate, from a pub perspective Is that a 1 metre distance works better, It would, but I have to say I think the 2 metre rule is safer.....
