Be interesting to see if there's a similar incident after Cummings' brief in the general public that ends up getting a fine.

Or an historic case where the fine isn't reimbursed.
The acid test will be every single criminal barrister using it as a defence and someone being cleared on account of the AG saying it's fine

Like you, I am baffled.

For what feels like months, this has not been a political issue. The early fiscal help was terrific, the ramping up of the HMRC and DWP has been noticeable and decent. Everyone pretty much has followed the rules, the shops have been brilliant, and ok, the weather has helped, but in general, UK Public have supported the Government and scientists with their compliance.

And now? The whole thing is threatened by a scruffy, goblin looking no mark.

And they have politicised it too. They have tried to make a wedge issue-us versus them, remoaners v brexiteers, traitors v brits, good parents v the press etc. It has just spectacularly backfired. The question now isn't whether it does damage, but how much damage are they going to allow it to do.

Which if you are a teacher is about the worst message you can here. I mean successive governments since the 90's have spent decades building the idea that going to school is important, and you have to have legitimate reasons to keep them away. You do wonder how much of that work has been trashed by this episode.

The worst scenario in the short term, is half the kids turn up. You end up teaching lessons you know you will have to repeat, which for kids that age means the half that have done it before are bored. What an absolute joke this is turning into.

Tbf, I don’t think this Cummings episode will make one iota of difference to the school situation. Thanks to government, local councils and unions it’s an absolute farce anyway. Different councils opening or staying closed, Unions demanding the most draconian application of rules and regs. The Cummings debacle plays no part.....

I hope that the UK public will prove we aint as green as we are cabbage looking. Let them play their games, if we just keep doing what keeps us as safe as possible, (which is my experience), they will get their collective come uppance.

It’s a tricky one isn’t it. My guess is that some pubs will disappear because of this virus, if the rules and regs make going to the pub a waste of time then many more will......

I love the pub, it's one of the places I feel most relaxed but I cannot see how all the rules will make it relaxing. With the furlough there until October, it could make more sense for pubs to use it. Guess rents may be the problem.

1 in 6 is guessed at pubs going under, and nearly 1 in 4 of the non chains
The problem with pubs is that by and large, they are incredibly badly run. They are in many ways a relic of the past that have never particularly caught up, especially with drinking at home being far cheaper. There’s pubs in my hometown that are absolute ghost towns, but bottle shops that have kept up with what drinkers actually want are rammed at a weekend.

All 16,000* of them...........

'only those needing to travel for family reasons' which will be everyone once any decent lawyer is done. 16000 FPN all having to be reviewed and likely rescinded just to allow one man a trip on his wife's birthday.

The usual suspects must be incredulous at this waste of police time!

*That comma in there just for you @peteblue
