Mate if you want to blame anyone for this virus blame the Chinese Government for some of that countries "practices".

Literally impossible to stop the spread of this thing bar the complete banning of people coming in and out of the country as soon as it was spreading in China.
Saudi Arabia did that by closing the Mecca down last week only 3 cases of it...arising last week....Iran let the pilmgamage open flooded by cases and deaths of it .....

Well as shown in Korea and other places that really isn't true. You flatten the curve as the government call it, by taking aggressive measures to contain it. You do nothing and the curve shoots up. This is born out by the experience and examples of other countries across the globe.

What happened in Hubei as you rightly point out, was the result of doing absolutely nothing.
The healthcare systems were overwhelmed, as they are now in Italy, with doctors choosing who to save, and who to live or die. Try to imagine that.

I am not playing partisan politics here, this is not political point scoring, or cheering for one team over the other, I want my family, including older relatives to have the best possible protection from a government, who are compassionate/competent

You'll have plenty of time to rage against the Chinese when it is all over. Right now you should concentrate on you and your own family, and get active (prepare) because the governments' policy could utterly break the healthcare system, and a majority of the population of England could end up with this thing. And yes if it comes to that, then many old folks won't have a fricking chance...so ya I'm fuming...

To be honest I think in week or two things will have a momentum of their own, irrespective of the government advice, and people will start acting on their own.

My local region has put some measures in place today:

Schools, kindergartens to close as of Monday for all children bar those of parents doing critical work (e.g. medical personnel, police etc)
Theatres, public swimming pools, museums, zoos, trade fairs etc to close
Daily disinfection of tubes, trams, buses
Bus, tram, tube drivers to open doors centrally so passengers are not pushing the doors' buttons
No public events larger than 200 people, private events asked to follow public lead
Various town halls closing down
Extra testing centres to be built so everyone in the region is theoretically within 30km of one

On a national level small financial aid packages for parents who have to miss work to supervise their kids (although only for a few days, otherwise they have to take holiday or unpaid leave if their employers don't make an arrangement for them)

Let's see if that helps
Munich is banning gatherings of over 100!

My advice is to keep yer chin up - reading this forum lately (and social media in general) is depressing and I dread to think how folk modern day would have coped during the Blitz or WW1, Great Depression etc.

Yes we have to take this seriously but too much fear causes anxiety/depression which lowers your immune system.

Bit of stiff upper lip and trying to go about your daily business is how I'll be living these next couple of months.

I like the fact that Boris has done nothing, yet the RS will not be champions, and they can’t even fume against him...played a blinder here.....

You are right I do have to get away from this stuff for a while! ;)

Tories on here support their government unfailingly.

I hope the own their position in the coming deluge.

I don’t get it. Do they know that this thing is here to stay so they’re going with the herd immunity strategy? I’ve heard people in China have been infected twice so how does it work?

I work in food hygiene and we have been inundated this week for orders for hand soaps and hand sanitisers. I thought it might be useful to give some information on the coronavirus regarding effective disinfection products. The first thing is that it is not difficult to kill with disinfectants. They are generally easier to kill than bacteria, yeasts, moulds and spores. There has been a lot in the media regarding use of >60%/70% alcohol to kill these viruses. Part of the reason for this is that to date not many products outside of those containing alcohol have actually been tested. We have several products which contain a material called benzalkonium chloride (BAC). As a raw material this has been shown as being effective against coronaviruses at concentrations above 500 ppm (parts per million). This equates to 0.05%. I've just been onto the Tesco web-site and whilst they are showing no availability for almost all of their wipes, they do have availability for their antibac floor wipes. These are based on BAC at levels significantly above the 500 ppm pass level. I can't see any ingredients listed that would cause me any major concern for use on kitchen food preparation surfaces etc. We have been advised to regularly disinfect the main touch point surfaces in our homes using similar wipes. If you see anything that passes EN1276 or EN 13697 it should be OK even though these are antibacterial tests. Contact time for these tests is usually 10 minutes, so after this time you can wipe off any residues with a paper towel etc. Bleach is also a very effective fall-back, although there can be taint issues if you are not careful around food prep areas.

We are stocked up in Madrid for the foreseeable. If anyone knows La Latina in the city they will know how strange it would be to see it as a ghost town on a Friday night. Good luck fella.
Not overly concerned at the minute. We rely on bottled water so have stocked up massively on that. Hoping it blows over soon. Quite surreal at the minute out here
