So are we likely to be responsible for paying back all this government debt in the next tax year?

I see tfl have increased their fares and probably in top of a rise back in January. No doubt other tocs (train operating companies) will announce price increases just as the transport secretary pledges more money for rail infrastructure.

The majority of the new debt Government is taking on will not mature over the course of this Parliament.

The majority of Government debt overall is also owned by the Bank of England (which is significantly increasing its percentage share of Government debt) NS&I savings and British based pension funds. Only a minority of UK debt is owned by foreign institutions. This makes a sovereign debt crisis highly unlikely.

The key is for all of this talk of possible tax rises and concerns about the deficit to stop. All this will do is reduce consumer and investor confidence.

The Government needs to keep spending throughout in order to sustain and then grow the economy.

We can, as a country, sustain much higher levels of debt than we have now. Once the economy is back up and running the debt pile will naturally erode through growth and inflation.

With regards to TOCs, they are all currently on management contracts, with all revenue and risk transferred to the DfT. Any fare increases can therefore only be done by the Department - unlike previously when TOCs could raise unregulated fares like advanced singles.

Probably not next year, but yes all countries will no doubt see tax rates increase and public spending reduced etc for quite a while. Australia only just got their deficit back to neutral from the gfc, so I would expect this will take even longer to recover from

This is brilliant

Obviously with the benefit of hindsight but wow does this look bad now.

I know we were still in herd immunity mode at this point (he’s basically saying keep working even though his words are it’s ok to use the tube) but come on ‘all you have to do is wash your hands don’t worry about anything else’ when it was clear what was happening elsewhere.

Extremely reckless and has no doubt cost lives.

IF you had a choice of either
A maccies
A haircut
An Antibody test
Which would you choose ???
Personally, a haircut and my hair isn’t particularly bad at the the minute. I’m really not sure what good an antibody test would do me, apart from say that I’ve had it in the past. It wouldn’t particularly change my life all that much and I’d still be restricted in what I can do by the wider lockdown of society. For others it’s far more crucial.

People shouldn’t be using the anti body test out of intrigue.

I’m not sure it will make much of a difference anyway. There’s still no real confirmation that you can’t get the virus twice
