Fascinating that “sheer bloody mindedness“ can be empirically quantified lol
In one experiment, consumers were asked to select a granola bar, but not to select one of the choices. The rate at which consumers chose that granola bar went up about 40% when they were told to avoid it, Fitzsimons said.

I also think we have to be realistic that socially distancing kids is not always going to be possible. The risk needs to obviously be lowered a lot before a return, but we can't keep schools closed until the risk is zero because a full year or more out of school is not fair on kids and would be a disaster.

That's a fair assessment mate. Most of the people I've seen having a go at us teachers to go back now are using a classic straw man argument -- that essentially we're asking to wait until there is no risk.

That is not the case as that is not realistic. But the risk has to be lower, and if the risk isn't lower by September then we will have far bigger problems than education in my opinion. We have already been criminally inept and slow when it comes to testing and tracing, but hopefully with 3 1/2 more months we can bring the numbers down and ensure we are in a position to reliably identify and deal with outbreaks when they happen. The news about the antibody test this morning is encouraging on that note, but again, sending so many teachers and children back now when we don't have these tests available to the public and we are still trialing contact tracing methods just boggles the mind.

I always remember watching something on the telly, they had people coming into an office thinking they were coming in for a job interview, on the desk there was a red button with 'do not press on it' the interviewer then made an excuse to leave the room for a bit each time, nearly every single person being secretly filmed pressed it!

Can only assume that some people are stupid as well as bloody-minded in that case. If it was in the context of a job interview the first thing that would occur to me in the same situation was that this was an obvious test and I would expressly not take the bait.

Same thing I was thinking when watching it mate. The funny thing was a lot of the people who pressed it actually started looking round the room as if they were thinking "this doesn't feel right" yet they still felt the urge to press it.

Starmer is absolutely holding them to account, he's not screaming and shouting, he's pointing out their failings and they have no reply.

I'm telling you now, there has been a change in the commons, not one Tory is happy to take on Starmer, you can see why he was a top lawyer, he puts together compelling arguments.
spot on mate, Keir’s been impressive so far.

When they talk about primary schools opening on the continent they should make it clear that primary school starting age in say Denmark and Germany is 6. In both countries there's a kindergarten system for under 6s.

When and how will Germany's daycare centres reopen? - The ...

"A four-phase model, first proposed by Federal Minister of Family Affairs Giffey (SPD), is currently under discussion.

The phases include emergency care, as it is already in place; extended emergency care, ie. for single parents in all states, starting on May 11th; limited regular operations; and a return to full normal operations".

What do independent experts demand?

The Trade Union for Education and Science (GEW) said that sufficient time is needed to gradually bring children back into a daycare setting.

"More children in this situation means that there has to be good planning in order to rearrange rooms, remove furniture, redistribute toys and plan sufficient staffing. This cannot be done overnight," GEW board member Björn Köhler told the Tagesschau.

He said that carers also need to be adequately protected: Anyone who belongs to a risk group, or is over 60 years old, should be able to decide for themselves whether or not to look after children.

In addition, the GEW stated that no more than five children at a time should be looked after.

However, Germany’s Association of Paediatricians and Adolescent Doctors is pushing for a speedy reopening of daycare centres.

Kitas and elementary schools must be quickly reopened "with clever measures to prevent infection," President Thomas Fischbach told the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung".

The follow up research will be interesting as it will from Denmark over their kindergartens.

Japan suicides decline as lockdown causes shift in stress factors
Suicide in Japan fell by 20% in April compared to 2019, the biggest drop in five years, despite fears of the coronavirus pandemic causing increased stress and many prevention helplines either not operating or being short-staffed. People spending more time at home with their families, fewer people commuting to work and the start of the school year being delayed are seen as factors in the fall.

I'm still working from home but I am a lot happier since I haven't been on the motorways for 2 months I can tell you.

The solution is probably somewhere in the middle like with most things.

We are going to have some risks for the foreseeable in all walks of life and it's about reducing them first and then managing them till a vaccine. Getting the balance is going to be difficult and will never please everyone.

I'm in NI and it's pretty certain kids arent due back here until September. But I do think it's very important that we do get schools back then even if it does mean things are different. The longer kids are off then the more they are missing out.

Only yesterday, there was a report from Spain saying that they suspect from sample trials that only 5% of their population have had it - France too!

Even in Madrid, where the largest outbreak has been within Spain, they're only looking at around the 10% mark. If correct, we're way off immunity!

Not paying for the Telegraph, but would be curious to know their sample sizes. Just with previous studies claiming much higher numbers it's hard to take this article on face value. If this is true, though, it would be a huge blow.

Found this an interesting discussion with Harvard Medical school pediatrician about the inflammatory illness in kids

Apparently disproportionately affects those of Afro-Caribbean backgrounds.

Might point to a non socio-economic factor in some reactions to the virus?

the EU thread, 4588 pages, this one (so far) 2212 has pages, in just four months, think come September it will be the longest in the CA forum.
