Since February Dave has done the MOOC from Imperial on what a virus is so is more qualified than Whitty now.

It's giving people room to do whatever they want while the government says it's purely local decision making rather than national policy.

So businesses open, offices open, parks open and if there is a new spike, which the government are hoping there won't be, but there probably will be; the government can say it wasn't national policy, when the 'official Government line' is stay home where you can.

It really is an apocalyptic scenario coming down the track. It's been a catastrophe thus far, but this could trigger something medieval in scale.

I understand it that when someone calls this crime scene for what it is they get bent out of shape. But imagine defending this?

Can someone explain to me how this all important R rate is calculated?
I saw the dial on the news and the arrow swings about all over the place ( I had a watch like that so I had to take it to Timpsons but that's not important right now).
Going back to my original question I assume it is about the number of deaths and the number of infected but as they don't know how many are infected as they have only tested a handful of people how do they work it out?

Not quite.

If we assume that today the R is currently 0.7, and we've currently got 100,000 people infectious in the country, then those 100k people will infect 70k people and the number of new cases a day will drop

But, if R rises to 0.9, those 100k people will infect 90k people, and the number of new cases a day will still drop, but it'll drop at a slower rate.

Also, as more people get infected, then, all other things being equal, R will very slowly drop by itself because some of the people who would originally have got infected, have already been infected and should, hopefully anyway, be immune.

Agree if R is below 1 the number of new infections starts falling.

However BJ said we move down to the next level when R falls. This is not directly affected by the absolute number of infections. It can only fall through fewer contacts (unless a significant number of people become immune).

Keeping doing what we are doing would in theory keep R static. Any more contract and it will rise. This is just a mathematical fact until such time as the amount of immune people in society reaches a significant level (I could do the maths to work out what this is- but it’s late!).
