It's the worst possible time for a county to be governed by a populist leader. Both Trump and Johnson have [Poor language removed]-footed around with their messaging, people don't need guidance, they need telling. No surprise that these two are world leaders' in the death rate statistics as they try to pander to the popular media. Watched 'The Darkest Hour' again last night and it occurred to me that Johnson is actually attempting to play Churchill in real life. The only thing he has in common with him is his rather bumbling persona (which I'm starting to wonder is all part of the act). It's as if he's on Stars in their Eyes, "Tonight Mathew, I'm going to be Winston Churchill", no you're not mate, you're really not.

This might have been the original intention - but as we have seen with PPE, testing, public health and nearly every other facet of HMG’s response they probably didn’t understand that the decade of “efficiency” they’d brought about had made that impossible.

Austerity put the police into a situation where they are capable of dealing with business as usual, but not much beyond that without very time limited surge measures - changing everyone’s shifts, overtime etc. Closing the schools and banning grandparents/ non-family visits as well made a lot of that less possible, since someone has to look after the kids.

This is unfortunately the wind they’ve sown, and now they are reaping the whirlwind.

You're overlooking the fact that austerity had to be brought in due to Labour putting the country in debt.

They spent tons of money to stay in power then after they run up all the credit cards blame austerity on the Tories.

Just look at Liam Byrne's letter for proof of the contempt Labour have for the people they are supposed to care for.
They spent tons of money stopping the banks imploding like many other countries.

So you would support police, NHS, public health, councils etc being further cut to pay for the debt this lot have built up?

If you're in debt and can't address it through other means you don't really have much choice, although the Tories shouldn't have wasted so much money on pointless wars that have achieved very little.

I'm no fan of austerity but I don't believe the Tories are to blame for it, I don't think they had much choice, not unless you believe in running up huge debt.

The tories have reduced the deficit so I don't understand what debt they have built up that you're talking about, unless you're refering to the current crisis. They'll have to raise taxes to pay for the stuff currently.
