Isn't it up to the governors to shut down their state or not anyways? Trump can't force them to open or shut down I read somewhere

It is, but in a national public health crisis the expectation would be that they would follow the recommendations of the CDC which would have the full support and weight of the president. Trump has undermined the CDC and HHS at every step

It's not about commerce. Just because you and I are OK doesn't mean everyone else is. There are people that rely on schools being open, for some kids it's their only meal. For some kids it's an escape from child abuse. There are people who only have one income and live paycheck to paycheck who have now lost their jobs and probably their homes too and are now living in extreme poverty. There are sick people afraid to go to hospitals for check ups who are dying, infact cancer rates are worryingly down, which suggests people aren't going and getting checked up, hence people will die. People can't escape domestic abuse and will die. People can't leave their home to socialise etc and will become mentally ill and will lead to suicide. It goes beyond commerce. There has to be an alternative to only lockdown or vaccine.

People are so obstinate with this outlook that the economy can just stop and stems from a line of thinking that A) they're OK so they assume everyone else is and B) the economy being shut down only effects the "fat cats".

I'm not disputing the lockdown has saved lives but it's also costing lives and that's before we even start considering the long term implications this is going to have. Agree with me or not the fact is it's not sustainable.
I don’t think we are that far apart in our thinking Brendan. I agree that lockdown is damaging in many respects and that there has to be an easing of restrictions but only when scientifically proven save to do so.

Undoubtedly there are people who are suffering now because the system had failed them already and lockdown has made it even worse. Despite that, I am not getting a sense from Downing St that this, or anything like it, is what is driving their imminent plan to ease restrictions.

At the outset of the pandemic we were told that it was science that had advised the complete lockdown of society. Surely now it is reasonable to expect the same clear statement from the medical experts that the situation has now changed and life can begin to get back to normal? If we don’t get this unambiguous advice then I suggest it is safe to assume that the health of the nation is not the driving concern behind the Government’s proposals.

Next three weeks will still be lockdown, just with some possibility of measures being lifted (very slightly, I don't know what they could be - perhaps visits between households?)

End of May would then be measures really starting to be lifted (not all at once) wouldn't it.
Maybe garden centres opening where it's easy to socially distance

Leave him alone.

I was under the impression there was a lockdown in UK...Grealish and Kean were pulled up on it as was Walker.

Now he breaks the rules because he feels like it + blaming it on the media.

Hes broken lockdown 4 times now...no punishment. People wonder why the UK isnt coping well with the virus.

Over here he would be in jail.

I think if we use Twitter as a barometer of deaths in this country the figure currently stands at 560 million. Amazing how many peoples dads have died with them still glued to social media.

Well my notorious little northern town is always right up there for teenage pregnancy rates, right up there for alcohol related incidents and turns out we’re also properly wank at stopping this virus spread. (red line)

Cases per 100k:

That was one of the interesting things from the geographic data I posted yesterday. Whereas in many countries, the concentration seems to be very high in some places (Lombardy or Madrid, for example), it was very low in other parts of those countries. In the UK, it seems to be far more evenly spread around, with places in the midlands and north west easily comparable with London.
