Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Can’t recall the mask requirements in Irish reopen scheme but found this bit interesting too “But when I look internationally, it seems that the most dramatic effects are due to social distancing, good hygiene etiquette and probably the wearing of masks as well.” Agree with his tesf turnaround time comments, especially in light of the research of the infection window being primarily pre-symptomatic/early stage.

Still haven’t found much explanation worldwide for the difference in adverse serious outcomes for men , especially given this ‘”The latest information also shows that of those who have contracted Covid-19, 58 per cent are female and 42 per cent are male, while the median age is 49 years.”

Looks like it’s going to be advice on face coverings here mate, won’t be enforced but advised, though I’d imagine there will be a social stigma attached to not adhering.

Haven’t seen a study on the gender anomaly, it’s curious given infection rates vs RIP prevalence, I suspect we will see a study in time.

You might this subjective anecdotal article interesting.

Thanks, found this bit particularly interesting “There can be biological differences in the immune system between men and women which impacts our ability to fight infections,” she said. “Our blood chemistry and our immune cell count do differ between men and women and may be contributing to some of the differences that we are observing in the severity of the disease.”

I’d read previously about women having stronger immune systems, for example
but one of the downsides is cytokine storms which seem to be the wild card factor on a lot of the coronavirus deaths
so I’d expected that women rather than men would be more vulnerable to it but that doesn’t seem the case.

So Tony Blair’s and Gordon Brown‘s CSA, Sir David King, is setting up a similar group to SAGE. Now there is no way that this will get political, oh no, purely scientific......
He's the only guest speaker I've seen who's been threatened with being thrown off question time for persistently interrupting other guests.

It will be interesting to see what they come out with. There will obviously be certain bits of data that are going to be available to SAGE that external bodies, such as this one or the Royal Society, probably won't have access to. There's no competition argument for not releasing the data that shows their working, so I can only think of a few reasons why they wouldn't do so.

a) The data shows the magnitude of the problem, and they think the public can't handle the truth
b) The data shows that government actions diverge from what the scientists are recommending
c) It's just another example of the culture of secrecy that was evident during the Brexit negotiations

In some ways it is peculiar though, as Cummings has banged on at length about recruiting 'weirdos', and what that basically means is people from a range of backgrounds who are emboldened to speak up, even if it goes against the grain. We see with Johnson's cabinet appointments that he has stacked the cabinet with sycophants to the Brexit cause (especially when one of those (Patel) is currently fighting allegations she has bullied senior staff from their jobs because they disagreed with her), and the lack of representatives in Sage that aren't employees of the government doesn't suggest it's either especially diverse or especially emboldened to speak up.

It could all be different on the inside of course, and we don't really have any insights into the workings of the committee.

I wish they’d stop including the ‘tests sent in the post number’. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Has there been any analysis as to the reliability of home testing? I can certainly see the benefits of sending the tests to people rather than requiring a symptomatic individual out into the public to get tested, but equally, the tests seem to be hugely invasive, and I wonder if people are willing to subject themselves to it such that proper results are obtained?

Football behind closed doors next season aswell on ssn...

Cant see pubs be opening then untill end of next season because what would be the point in not letting people go the match but all crowd into a pub?

Not seen too many pubs that hold as many as Goodison

True with restaurants, but I can see many not bothering and maybe just doing take away or something. It would be hard to operate on 25% capacity.

Sadly, trying that would be a disaster in pubs and you know country pubs will just completely ignore it.

I live in a rural village, but part of a borough of about 100,000 people. We have had 34 deaths.. yes 34 out of over 100,000.

Don't you think a full lock down is over the top for us compared to a big city?

It's not about ignoring it... just the risk is so small

Deaths aren't the only thing though are they, you have no idea how many people have been infected by it.

It only makes sense' if your trying to save face/your political career with your 100 000 tests a day agenda.

There's no way we can end the lock down without face masks. Fully expect 'evidence' to show that face masks are indeed essential wear, to slow down the spread of the virus - which was always the case - to enable the lock down to end.

Edit. As well as questioning/muddy the waters over the '2 metre rule'.

Edit. This from the BBC.

Possible post-lockdown workplace rules revealed
