Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

The question of an exit strategy and when will there be one and how will it look, has been a topic in the media recently and with the well reported collapse in the oil price last week, economic matters and can we recover after such huge crisis spending and a worldwide lockdown has been the question.

I must admit to thinking the stock market(s) - since they're global and 24 hrs now - on the verge of a crash only a week ago, but while the oil price continues to cause concern the FTSE100 here has perversely turned higher reaching a seven week high and recovering more than 20% from the March low which is 'bull' market territory, and perhaps the start of a speculative run even higher. The markets nearly always move higher or lower in tandem so pretty much reflected elsewhere.

The only explanation is they're betting on a 'V' shaped recovery where we've hit the bottom with industry and commerce still in sufficiently reasonable shape to respond to the future relaxation of the measures.

Large amounts of cash idle could conceivably fuel a consumer led boom as some return to work in the near future.

Important to note these markets are international in nature and won't just reflect what's going on here.

It seems an extremely optimistic view to me but it's always said they react to what they think is going to happen rather than the situation right now.

So difficult to read and when they do go up to use the old cliché, 'they always climb a wall of fear' with so many predicting the edge of a cliff coming soon - almost at every step of the way up.

Indeed the capacity of distraction is all the rage.

However, this time it's not some child abused adult junky on benefits Conservative Government can castigate and gloat how tough they are on benefit claiments.

Its going to be family and friends who are going to die indiscriminately because as a country we have taken the wrong decisions.

There was a very strong sense of anger in yesterdays COVID19 update from media. The only reason for this its what viewer's and readerships are wanting.
Dont forget, there's going to be a shake out of their industry too - especially the print media. Less papers bought and read, less advertising revenue. Apart from lackey's in the pocket of Johnson like the Telegraph, I'd expect much more criticism...and if this government deny bosses their "right" to open up for business for much longer the criticism will grow stronger in the media.

Capacity or tests
Vast differences
My bank account has capacity for a Billion Euro
However there is only 25 cent in it
You're correct there, however you could argue that as long as the % uptake of tests matches or beats the rise in capacity we will soon be testing enough.

That's not trying to defend a pretty shameful record on testing that we have, but in reality they've focused on capacity and hopefully we'll now see the rise in tests.

I’m interested in the population density of nation states. I take it everyone stands equidistant from each other?

I was in Melbourne earlier in the year and can definitely confirm it has a higher population density than rural Northumberland where I live.

It would seem that to ensure that the UK and US don’t look so terrible is to put all the dead people to one side for a moment whilst looking at the figures.

At last a welcome distraction from politics.
And months later, maybe a time to reflect on the hardship some communities worldwide live in year round while we all feel sorry for ourselves in a limited period of lockdown ?

The people on here who are busily denying the adequacy of comparison between nations are doing a huge disservice to the forum...and their comments are, quite frankly, insulting.

This has been a catastrophe. To offer others their sophistry on statistical 'evidence' helps those in power to cover up their crimes. Unforgivable.

This mixes facts we all agree on such ax 'this had been a catastrophe' with your usual portion of vilification and invective for anyone giving analysis which may not fit your agenda's strict partisan guidelines.

It wasn't even opinion but facts I gave when highlighting how fraught with difficulty comparing across countries actually is.

Doing this isn't insulting, you stretch the limits of credibility so much that calling the difference between night and day can be seen as insulting to you. (If it doesn't fit in with your ideology)

Of course they have to be held to account for errors made (and PPE and testing areas well highlighted) it doesn't do anyone any good to pretend they couldn't have done things a hell of a lot better.

Just these comparisons across countries make very little sense indeed and are fraught with problems as it's plainly not at all like with like.

You're 'doing a disservice to the forum' nonsense is the usual lowest form of attack if you can't attack the post attack the poster.

Sadly I expect it from you.

Agenda? Tens of thousands of people are dying here and you think I have need to create an agenda to have a go at those in power who are largely responsible for it? All I do is hold a mirror up to these developments and describe them in the only trerms that can possibly apply - catastrophic, disastrous, butchery.

And dont take my post personal, you're not the only one who seeks to add "context" to these appalling national statistics.
