Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

To be fair Bruce surely you don't need to have peer reviewed evidence for every policy decision.

I cannot see a scenario where wearing a face mask would increase transmission, for example.

I wear a face mask, it inhibits my breathing, I cough, I still can’t breath properly so take it off, I cough again. Without the mask at all, I would have been able to breath and would not cough. And before anyone thinks I just put this up as an argument, I haven’t. I cannot cover up my nose and mouth and still breath properly....

It's interesting that you, an academic, are so in favour of this despite there being no peer reviewed research showing they do anything. The mood is very much that these will be mandatory so that governments can say they're doing stuff, but intellectually, you seem to be backing these on a feeling rather than evidence?
The evidence against wearing masks is that they dont protect the wearer. They do protect anyone coming into contact with the wearer though. That is completely accepted. So, if everyone wears them then there's a beneficial effect for all. If they have no effect then why do medics wear them? And if your answer to that is that they work in highly contagious environments with Covid19 positive patients, then, potentially, so too do the general public under certain circumstances come into contact with those symptomatic and also with people asymptomatic.

This (increasingly settled) debate is not won in this country because the incompetent bunch of butchers who *govern* cant provide them in sufficient numbers.

The argument has been won on the rational use of face masks, it's only those arguing from a supply pov for health / care workers getting provision of this resource first that are reluctantly dragging ther feet...and that's down to finances and procurement.

Wee krankie said today that asthma sufferers needn't wear one.

They'll have to walk around with a placard saying "I have asthma. Please don't spit at me"

Mainly to prevent infection between patients. Thats why they are all single use, and donned before any patient contact, then immediately binned after job is done.

Granted, Covid makes it as much about their, (NHS) protection than in less trying times.

I expect the countries that make these masks will be in favour of them.....
