Is it not proven that whilst masks won't 100% stop you from getting infected, they cut down the amount of infected droplets that you yourself exhale, and thus do in fact cut transmission down if everyone would wear one? It's interesting that you, an academic, are so in favour of this despite there being no peer reviewed research showing they do anything. The mood is very much that these will be mandatory so that governments can say they're doing stuff, but intellectually, you seem to be backing these on a feeling rather than evidence?

I didn't realise that ONS, or anybody else for that matter, have been collating data from care and nursing homes. Is this a new thing? Not before time if so.Notification of a death from a home is available more quickly as data than official death registration.
To be fair Bruce surely you don't need to have peer reviewed evidence for every policy decision.
I cannot see a scenario where wearing a face mask would increase transmission, for example.
Now starting to see the mental health repercussions for those on the frontline.
They will have some truly awful visions in their minds for years to come.
I hope they will all get the aftercare that they need once this awful tragedy is over.
Most the geriatrics are passing in care homes or hospices, not hospital... They are separated disciplines for good reason.I imagine seeing someone come in mangled from a smash on the motorway is a bit more horrific than watch a geriatric slip away in their sleep due to this.
If they worked in healthcare before then they are likely well accustomed to it.
Person 1 works from home wearing no mask
Person 2 goes to work on the tube wearing a mask because it's safe
I'd say person 2 is more likely to transmit than person 1.

It can. Touch the mask with virus coated hands and now you've put the virus is just the right place to breath it in.
