A Prof from Oxford working on a vaccine said today that herd immunity via contracting the virus is unlikely to be effective as immunity seems to be short lived. Vaccine a better bet as it should confer immunity for at least a year or so, based on similar vaccines they have developed.

She sounded extremely confident of the work they are doing though, as did a American virologist on CNN who gave similar timelines

Herd immunity as a theory is more the domain of the flu than a cold.

We definitely wouldn’t want everyone to get Coronavirus simultaneously.

I think the MERS vaccine that the Jenner Institute has been trialling is the source of the hypothesis that a vaccine might confer immunity for a year or so.
